This is really annoying. Apple does it again to their customers with their proprietary files, now HEIC.

My wife ion her Phone8 has taken a bunch of photos in this format. Since then I have turned that format off.

However, when trying to import into Photos, El Capitan, iMac, for a slideshow, those files they will not display.

I am not upgrading to High Sierra, so tired of Apple obsoleting their customers hardware with a continuing flow of OS's, none of which really add any value.

So it there a way to display photos in the application.

I downloaded the iMazing HEIC converter and it works great for one file at a time.

Comments.

Try some of the suggestions from some of the hTry some of the suggestions from some of the hits here:
mac display HEIC Photos
https://www.google.com/search?q=mac...i57j69i64l2.7719j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Note: I guess I'm really behind the times but I don't use a recent iPhone and I didn't even know what a HEIC Photo was.

I guess they needed another "new & improved" photo format standard. :[

Anyway, try here as well:
https://www.imyfone.com/phone-data-transfer/how-to-view-heic-photos-on-mac/

And their comment sounds a bit familiar:
The first issue is that on older systems, you may not be able to open and view HEIC photos. You need macOS High Sierra to be able to view HEIC files natively. This may sound silly, but it’s all part of Apple’s tendency to make their older system obsolete.

EDIT:
BTW: It seems that you might be able to convert the HEIC Photos on the iPhone and make them more compatible. Maybe that would bypass having to use iMazing HEIC converter on each single one.

Hello - not sure that I can add much to your dilemma, so sorry - Patrick has provided several links that may help. But just to clarify for others unfamiliar w/ this 'new' image format - first, as wrongly stated above in bold, this is not an Apple proprietary format, as explained briefly in the quote below (Source) - the HEIF standard was developed by the MPEG (who came out w/ MP3 several decades ago, among other AV formats); as times change, the need for more efficient storage (even w/ added resolution improvement) is simply a natural progression - in time, I'm sure better ways of handling this 'new' format will appear. Dave :)

Just curious, does the iMazing app not have a batch handling feature?

What is HEIC? - HEIC is the file format name Apple has chosen for the new HEIF standard. HEIF stands for High Efficiency Image Format, and, as the name suggests, is a more streamlined way to store image files. Using advanced, modern compression methods it allows digital photographs to be created in smaller files sizes, all while retaining higher image quality than its JPEG alternative.

It seems that the iMazing.app does have such ability:
By the iMazing Team
We make the best all around iPhone and iPad manager, iMazing. With iMazing.app, you can transfer and convert your iPhone's HEIC photos to JPEGs on your computer in one go.
https://imazing.com/heic

But to save any confusion as I understand things, the iMazing HEIC Converter.app that the OP seems to be using is a different and free app, just seems to offer:
Drag & Drop .heic files or folders
Fast and easy to use
https://imazing.com/heic

But of course, there's also quite a difference in the price between the two applications!!!

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet?

Firstly, you can choose whether to capture your pictures as High Efficiency (aka HEIF or HEIC) or JPEG.

On your iPhone > Settings > Camera > Format > Choose "High Efficiency" (HEIF); or "Most Compatible" (JPEG).

Secondly, even if you choose "High Efficiency" (HEIF), you can dictate the procedure by which these pictures are transferred to your Mac - either as HEIF or JPEG format.

Go into Settings > Photos > Scroll to the very bottom.

Here you will find "TRANSFER TO MAC OR PC".

There are two options: 1. Automatic, which transfers all photos in JPEG format - or - 2. Keep Originals, which means the transfer will be in whatever format you chose for the pictures/videos to be taken. In this case HEIF (HEIC), but that depends on your iPhone model. Some can only take JPEGs.

Another thing to note is that irrespective of which format your pictures are stored in the Photos app; when you export that picture, it is always exported as a JPEG.

So you are in control. You have the choice of which format you want your pictures to be taken AND which format you want them transferred to your Mac.

Never heard of this until now either. Unbeknownst to me, phone is set to High Efficiency but I've never had trouble with syncing because I keep the OS-es reasonably up to date.

iMazing is great for converting HEIC photos. Just drag the folder into the app, no need to remove .jpg, it will convert and place converted photos in a new folder.

I have a 1024 photo folder with a mixture of JPEG and HEIC photos, just dragged that folder in the app and it converted all the HEIC photos and placed them in a new folder.

It is free.

iMazing is great for converting HEIC photos. ... ... ... It is free.

NOTE: Just for the record — iMazing.app is NOT Free!!! iMazing HEIC Converter.app is.
Different applications. Different abilities.

See my post #4 above.

Thanks for clarifying that the free app is iMazing HEIC Converter 1.0.8.

I was not aware of their other app.

None of which is needed if you set up your iPhone/iPad as I outlined in post #5.

Remember, rim45, this what you said in your first post -

In fact, you and all Apple users are given choices. They are not forced on you. You could have chosen the format for taking pictures and how you wanted the pictures to be downloaded, as I said in my post.

There is a vast literature from Apple and other sources about the new format. I accept that many of us haven't the time or patience to read all this stuff, but that's the "penalty" of so-called digital progression.:Grimmace:

In that sense, I understand your anger.

You know, now that this has come up, I want to complain about how the daguerreotype picture was replaced by the collodion process. I mean, the daguerrotype produces a direct positive image, but the collodion process produces a backwards image, the so-called "negative" that then has to be processed to be put back to the proper format to be used. And nobody warned anybody about this change, either. That's really annoying. Now I have to do two steps to get my images where under the daguerrotype it was so much simpler. And this guy, George Eastman, is talking about a paper process. I mean, what's the world coming to with all these changes?

And an interesting but OT fact about that George Eastman guy is that he was visiting RP Butchart at his home close by here years ago that is now known as The Butchart Gardens horticultural display (and where I worked for fourty years) when he received a call, a telegraph message no doubt, from his home office claiming they had discovered an almost foolproof color photo-print process.

He asked Mr Butchart, an avid photography fan, if he could be excused from his visit early to return home. Later on RP Butchart received some color photography samples for him to use in his own photography darkroom he had created next to the main kitchen.

PS: Little on no manuals provided!!! :Smirk:

PPS: And the new paper/celluloid process must have been much easier and newer than using the glass plates for slides method.

Note: I must say I do have to agree with some of rim's comments about Apple recently.

Of course you do, Patrick! You wouldn't be you unless you agreed with the complaint! It's what we have come to love about you, you lovable curmudgeon! :D

Good story about Eastman and Butchart. One wonders if Eastman may have used flowers to test the color process. I know that, as hard as it is to believe, the first permanent color photo was taken in 1861. You can see the reproduction here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_photography#/media/File:Tartan_Ribbon.jpg
