Right. Or Libre Office to convert from Word and Excel. I guess iWork apps do that too though.

I have a question on converting iWork documents to Microsoft Office documents. I have Microsoft Office 2016 installed and I am converting all my MS documents to iWork documents.(I don't want to run MS anymore) My question is, if Microsoft was never installed on my Mac, could the Mac still convert iWork documents to MS Office documents?

iWork, could always save files as Word, Excel, etc, compatibility/features may not always translate properly.

As Bob stated, it depends a lot on the document. I have several long documents that were done with Word some time ago (.doc format) and when converting to the iWork format (Pages), a lot of adjusting has to be made. Things like page breaks, inserted images, borders, etc, generally have to be re-formated. Simple documents are usually no problem when converting.

The new version of Pages has been improved quite a bit over the older iWork version. It especially goes well with the new dark mode in Mojave. I also like the two page zoom feature which is nice on my 27" display.

Keynote seems to work very well with Powerpoint documents. I have a large number of PP presentations and they all look great opening with Keynote. I can't speak for Numbers as I have no Excel documents to compare with.

Thank you chscag. I converted many Excel documents in the last few days (Business Invoices) to Numbers without any problems, no adjustments.

I know this is an older post but I would like to add what I've found when converting a word doc to pages. Not sure why but my word doc was only 66k in size when converted to pages it grew to 752k, now that's an extreme increase if you are converting a few gigs of doc's. Anyone have an idea why there is such a difference?

Kenny

How did your Word document arrive - email or a download from the net etc?

Did your Word document contain a lot of images or other graphics? Did it have a specific template such as a Newsletter or Business letter? I'm really just wondering if their were a lot of different Fonts or lots of "instructions" (wrong word but you get my meaning) governing its layout?

Although I have Office for Mac, I still do quite a number of Pages-to-Word and Word-to-Pages conversions and not seen this before.

Ian, I migrated from a win box (this is my first iMac) and they were just basic single page docs. The word 2007 doc was 66k in size when opened and saved under pages that same doc was 752k. I'm running Mojave 10.14.2..

I wonder if that's the reason.

Pardon my lack of exactitude in the matter; but I have no experience of Win Box or Bootcamp or any of the virtual Windows applications.

Give folks a day to get over Christmas celebrations and you may get a more meaningful reply.

It just may be a macOS/winOS thing? Maybe if the Word document was saved from Word for Mac, it would be the same size or closer to it?

While Mac files usually have some meta-data included that Win doesn't append, it's usually tiny.

Office/Win and Office/Mac files are "binary compatible across platforms". In other words, they are identical, not a different format that requires translation to go from one platform to the other.

If anything, you might expect Office files saved on Windows to be bigger than those saved on the Mac, because the Windows version of Office can embed fonts in the file, while the Mac version cannot.

I've devoted a Web site to the various options for word processor for the Mac:

Macintosh Word Processors

Another free option, in addition to LibreOffice, that hasn't made it to my Web site yet, is:

FreeOffice (free)
https://www.freeoffice.com/en/

You might like FreeOffice even better that LibreOffice. For instance, I tested FreeOffice's compatibility with complex Microsoft Office files, and I found it to be superior to LibreOffice in this regard.

That's interesting. SoftMaker (the developer) also publishes SoftMaker Office for the Mac (the paid version) which is a very nice clone of MS Office. I've tested their trial version fairly extensively and was prepared to buy a copy when my Office 2011 died whenever the next version of macOS is released. I'm going to give their Free Office a try to see how it differs from the paid version.

The only thing I didn't like about the SoftMaker paid version is the limited amount of fonts that it allows. That might have been due to the trial version though.

I'll let you know....

Downloaded this last night and played with it a bit this afternoon. Must say I'm impressed with the free suite as it surprisingly offers many things as their paid for full version. Most of what's left off from the free version are things that most users would not normally need anyway. One option that you will like is the ability to open, edit, and save files as *.docx. The free suite will save to *.docx by default once that option is chosen. As for font availability, I had no difficulty viewing all my Apple fonts. Why they were not available in the trial version of the paid for suite, I do not know. Might have been user error. LOL.

I only tested the word processor so I can not comment on their spreadsheet or presentation versions. However, the free Keynote and Numbers from Apple are hard to beat.

The free suite will also save documents to PDF, RTF, and TXT if so desired. And if you don't want or need the spreadsheet or presentation apps that come with the suite, they can easily be removed without disturbing the overall software. Something you can not do with LibreOffice.

One thing to keep in mind about other Office suites vs MS Office: If you have favorite templates that you use or templates that you designed for MS Office, they will have to be redesigned for the Free Suite or for that matter, LibreOffice or any other suite.

Overall, I recommend the Free Suite as an alternative to MS Office.

Our thanks to Randy for finding it. :)

I'm going to give their Free Office a try to see how it differs from the paid version.

Comparison chart of the features and costs of each of the three versions offered by Softmaker:
https://www.softmaker.com/en/comparison-freeoffice-softmaker-office

One option that you will like is the ability to open, edit, and save files as *.docx.

I always test word processors for compatibility with Microsoft Word format with my legal pleading template for Microsoft Word. It has some very complex formatting and up until now nothing has rendered it perfectly other than MS Word itself. FreeOffice opened it absolutely perfectly!
