I have been experiencing a problem lately that is perplexing. Sending of email.
At no particular time or day, intermittently would be more of an appropriate description of the problem, the mail program will reject send request and give notice to choose another server, of which I have three. Yahoo, hotmail and gmx. Alternatively, I try them all with like results. I've managed to get my mail out by going directly to the servers webpage via browser and draft them there. However, that doesn't solve the Apple Mail problem and the accompanying frustration. I hesitate to blame my provider, Verizon for I have fits and a nice high speed to go with it. But, anything is possible. I'm apt to blame the application for going directly to the servers and bypassing the mail program, the problem is nonexistent. But, a nuisance. Much easier to work out of the application. Any such problems out there? Any suggestions?

I use macOS Mail with Gmail for family and friends, and Hotmail/iCloud for all other emails.

Have you tried to tweak the settings on your accounts? Confirm nothing has changed? Everything is set up properly? Also, it will help if you provide your macOS version and the version of Mac Mail you are currently using?

To start with let me answer your queries. I am running Mac OS 10.13.6 (High Sierra) and Ver 11.5 (3445.9.1) of mail.

On all occasions, I have visited account settings in the event something had changed and at times reentered all of the particulars associated with the various accounts but found nothing afoul. That added to my confusion leading me here hopefully, to find a resolution, thinking that the problem wouldn't be a unique problem but one that has surfaced elsewhere.

I would sure be contacting your ISP Customer Tech Support as a first line of diagnosis.

Maybe they've been having some problems that are directly related to your problem which would certainly give you a reason for your problem.

Give this a try, create a new/separate login user account on the Mac, for testing purposes. Add one of the email addresses to Mac Mail in the new user account and see if it works correctly in there?
