I'm trying to help a friend restore his iPhoto library from his ancient MacBook to his also ancient iMac running 10.6.8. He has a Time Machine backup on an external drive. Although I have imported the backup file onto the iMac the file does not appear in the list of libraries. Help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Did you import into the iMac's Pictures Folder?

How did you import the file? What file did you import? Did you use Time Machine to restore the file or did you just copy it to the iMac?

If you hold option then click on iPhoto to open it, you should be asked to locate the library.

you can also use option when you click on Time Machine and it will ask if you want to open a "other" Time Machine backup disk.

Hey guys, thanks. I restored directly from TImeMachine and my recollection is that I found the file in Pictures on the external drive, highlighted it and hit restore.

Whatever you do on a drive that has been created by another computer will remain on that drive. So hitting restore while viewing the library on another computer is unlikly to do anything on the computer thats viewing it UNLESS you mean you were viewing it in the User Interface of Time Machine on the newer device.
To do what you are trying to do you will need to use either Migration Assistant or use the method described here. http://www.idownloadblog.com/2015/08/15/how-to-move-music-or-photos-to-a-new-mac-using-time-machine/

I did not want to leave this hanging. I've been trying to get together with my friend to fix this but have not been able to. I'll letyou know when I do and how it works. In the meanwhile, thanks to all for helping.
