Apparently, Office 2016 for Mac has been released today as a standalone version for 149$.
The 2016 version has been available for a few months as a bundle with Office 365, and now there is also a standalone version.
One for students @ 149 $ and one for business @ 249 $

I have been waiting for this to happen for some time so I'll start downloading soon :)

Cheers ... McBie

This release cycle probably benefits, ironically so, those who don't have 365. I have a 365 account and it took a bug fix release or two to iron out some major issues which all non-365 users will get out of the gate. That's what I get for being an early adopter. ;)

Thanks McBie. I haven't been particularly impressed with Office 2016 after having run the Preview right up until the release version. It might be just me but I don't really see where MS has made the kind of improvements where I consider it worthwhile to spend $149 for the new version. I only use Word and on occasion Powerpoint and probably will never use what "new features" MS has placed in the 2016 versions.

It also appears the only way (here in the US) the stand alone Office 2016 products for Mac can be purchased are direct from the Microsoft Store and requires a Microsoft Account. There is also no option to purchase a backup DVD as there is for some Windows products.

After using the 2016 trial with some very questionable results I also will be staying with 2011. chscag i did purchase Office 2011 as a download version and burnt my own DVD (had to use Toast Titanium) but have never needed it.

According to what I read from the MS FAQs, Office 2016 downloads and installs at the same time. I'm not sure you can make a backup disk as you did with Office 2011. It might download first and require clicking on a installation file but that's not the way I read it on their site.

In case anyone is interested, Mac Mall has Mac Office 2016 Home and Student (box set) for $139.99 US with free shipping. Includes license for one Mac. (This is $10 less expensive than buying from Microsoft who will also charge state tax on all sales. Mac Mall does not collect sales tax except for California residents.)

I recently installed Office 2016 (V15.27), and everything seems to be working fine. I was not concerned with Word and Excel, but I needed to insure that Outlook 2016 would function just like Outlook 2011. When I first booted up Outlook 2016, it offered to "import" all the Outlook 2011 stuff. I of course selected Yes, the import went without a hitch, and Outlook 2016 is working solidly. All of this is true for both of my machines. I am, though, still using the latest version of El Capitan, OS 10.11.6, waiting for the upgrade to TechTool Pro for Sierra compatibility before I "move" to OS 10.12.1. I am not anticipating any issues with Office 2016 and OS 10.12.1 (at least from what I have read).

I have a handy little application called "AppCleaner" that lets one "drop" an application icon onto AppCleaner's spot (after launching it), and AppCleaner finds just about all the files associated with the application. I am just about ready to do this with Office 2011, but I need to insure that Office 2016 does not need any files associated with Office 2011.

When 1Password was upgraded to V6.0, I tried to do that with prior versions of 1Password "stuff", but I had issues doing that. So, I am of course a little reluctant to do the same with Office 2011.

Hence, I am wondering if anyone here "upgraded" from Office 2011 to Office 2016 like I did (ie, installing Office 2016, and especially the part involving Outlook 2016), and then safely removed all "stuff" associated with Office 2011. Disk space is not the issue, as I have enough, but I hate to have any unneeded stuff around.

I would appreciate any advice/information/suggestions, etc. I of course still have a backup containing everything now, and in fact I will run through my disk cleanup/maintenance/repairs, and backups, tomorrow for both of my Macs. But, if I can remove Office 2011 after doing those tasks, that would be good.

How did you 'safely' remove Office 2011? It is about a 45 minute job. I have red in Office Support about just draggingit to Trash, but that does not do the job. On the other hand these are the instructions I have followed also supplied by Office Support.

https://support.office.com/en-us/ar...eea-b60b-7719c2cedd17?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US

I have NOT removed Office 2011 yet. And, as it is, when I do remove it, I will first launch the excellent free application AppCleaner, then "drop" the Office 2011 folder within my Applications folder onto AppCleaner. AppCleaner will then show ALL the files associated with Office 2011, at which time I would select to remove them all. AppClean then takes care of the rest.

I have followed that process for removing a number of apps, and it works real good.

Again, my main question is whether there are any files associated with Office 2011 that are needed by Office 2016. I suspect (and hope) not, but I'l like to get confirmation.

The answer is no there is not. However, I can tell you positively that Appcleaner will not completely remove all of Office 2011. Unless you follow the Microsoft instructions to the letter, much of Office 2011 will remain. Actually, Office 2011 and Office 2016 can co-exist without any problem. The only thing you will run into is which version of Office do you want to be the default for Office files. Office 2016 will make itself the default even if 2011 is active on your machine.

OK, thanks for that. After I do my disk cleanup/maintenance/repair, and backup, tasks tomorrow, I'll remove it from both of my Macs.

Please help! I have installed Word 365 for the Mac on a new 27" Mac. The program seems to be working fine BUT when I try to underline a sentence or portion thereof, no color shows on the screen.. The underline does make it possible to delete or cut andd pase that portion of the sentence, but I have no way of making sure which words are marked. All other programs on the machine obediently colors blue.

I have gone to tools and tried to change some things but none of the changes will give me a highlight color. My son says if I look very closely there seems to be a faint yellow. But I can't see it.

I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say underline a sentence or portion? When highlighting a word or phrase or anything else in Office 365 it will display the highlight color that you have chosen in System Preferences, General, Highlight Color. For example: I have chosen a red color for my highlighting (I'm using macOS Sierra but other versions of OS X are the same). When I highlight a word or phrase in Word or Powerpoint, it shows up in red. Apparently you have your highlight color set to blue? You can not change the highlight color for Office 365 within the program itself. You must do that as I stated above: System Preferences, General, Highlight Color.

Underlining and highlighting is the same in Office 2011, 2016, and Office 365. Nothing has changed in that respect since Office 2004. She is either doing something wrong or referring to another type of underline.

Office 2011 maintained an "Office 2011 Identities" folder, contained within /Users/UserName/Documents/Microsoft User Date, and within that folder was a Database that contains (I believe) all the EMails currently "within" Outlook 2011. As most folks know, when one deletes an EMail in Outlook 2011, it does not actually get deleted. To permanently remove such "Deleted" EMails, one would hold down the Option key while launching Outlook 2011, and the next screen would be entitled "Microsoft Database Utility", and one could Rebuild that Database file, and those "deleted" EMails would get removed.

From what I understand, Office 2016 does not have a similar "structure", and to permanently delete EMails, one holds down the Shift key while selecting "Delete" in Outlook 2016. I would appreciate if someone could either clarify and/or correct me about that (unless it is correct). Also, where does Office 2016/Outlook 2016 "hold" EMails (and maybe other stuff)?

Does anyone know if you can purchase any of the Office 2016 for Mac components separately? (Save me time searching the massive MS web site) For example, can you just purchase the new Outlook, or Word as stand alone apps?

Comes as a complete office package the Mac version. You may like to look at LibreOffice if you only need a word program.

No, not any longer. It has to be purchased as a complete package either by subscription (Office 365) or the stand alone business version which includes Word, PP, Excel, OneNote, and Outlook. Also, regardless of who you purchase the activation key from, the package can only be downloaded from the MS Server. I purchased the Home and Student version of 2016 which does not include Outlook.
