Had a disaster. 90% of all my jpg, tiff, and photoshop files will not open. Can see standard file icon but no image. Tried Lightroom 5, Pixelmator, Fotor, File Viewer, have always tried to stay away from iPhoto. DOn't know what I did or happened. 40,000 down the drain. So many file repair apps seem to be teasers / cons. Anyone have any suggestions? Running 2013 Intel iMac, OS 10.9.2.

I will be forever in your debt.

Wouldn't a collection of 40,000 photos justify a backup? If you have these backed up...you're good to go.:)

Excellent question. I use Time Machine (worthless), Twin SeaGate backup drives using CARBONCOPY, and a LaCie backup drive in our safe deposit box. I just changed from PC to Mac, one of the worst mistakes of my life. My meticulously organized files look like someone had broken into our house, got in our file cabinet and thru every file overt the entire house. I was devastated, but a least the files were intact, full sized. I would need to reorganize them but still . . . then I paid a visit to the local Apple GENIUSES *** **** ****** ******* . They insisted on reinstalling the system software. That's then disaster struck. In hind-site, I should have protected the SDB unit with my life and gone back to my PC, and returned the Mac, and breathed a sigh of relief. Instead, I kept trying and now I've paid the price.

I realize there are mutable things that happened and I don't expect anyone to have a magic solution, but any comment or suggestion would be appreciated. The only thing I can think of is perform a file recovery on my SDB drive and connect it back to my PS and proceed from there. Any good Recovery apps that aren't tease ware that isn't $139.00?

Not sure of the exact reasons for this. But of course...there are many many Mac users (old time users & recent switchers) who would disagree.

Any good Recovery apps that aren't tease ware that isn't $139.00?

DiskWarrior is highly rated. It costs around $99 (a fairly common price for file recovery programs).

Good luck,:)

I know.

The Mac 128 was my first computer. The Apple 2C got me through grad school.

But things have changed. Apple once made a promise that every program it made for the Mac would work on it's latest machine. They feel compelled to come out with a new operating system every year.

Apple used to do their own thing, now, they're just as bad as everyone else.

And the service ***** at the so called "Genies" bar. Genies my ***.

I'm still not sure I fathom exactly what happened. Just out of curiosity:

1. Do you know why did the Genius Bar insist on re-installing the system software.
2. Why do you find Time Machine worthless?

If you have TM backups and CarbonCopy backups, your pictures could very well be safe on them. But it's hard to tell from your posts exactly what happened and what the sequence was that led to where you are now. If you cut out the language that is triggering the filter and just say what the sequence of steps was, perhaps we can help you recover the files. Ranting about the Genius bar (not Genies bar) doesn't provide any useful information, as good as it may feel.

Data Rescue 3 is another good data recovery package. It typically gets the highest ratings from reviewers. I've used it before and it worked pretty well to recover a formatted drive.

Great to hear you're an old time user!:)

Apple once made a promise that every program it made for the Mac would work on it's latest machine.

I don't remember Apple making this promise...but I trust you if you say Apple did.:) If this promise was made...it must have been made a REALLY long time ago. Cause you & I both know that we certainly shouldn't expect a program that ran on a mid-1980's Mac to run on a 2013 Apple computer. And pretty much would we really want it to??;)

They feel compelled to come out with a new operating system every year.

Yes...this can complicate things a bit.

And the service ***** at the so called "Genies" bar. Genies my ***.

Most of my experiences at the Genius Bar have mostly been good. But there is the occasional visit that is not at good as others (nothing is perfect).
