Mail, Safari and Firefox crash when I try to attach files to an e-mail

I have been using my MacBook Pro for many years now with no problems, but just recently I have found that every time I try to attach a file to an e-mail, either in the Mail app or using different webmail accounts (yahoo, hotmail, university accounts etc.) the program crashes. It is the same using either Firefox or Safari.

I have tried rebooting, but not much else. As it appears to be affecting several programs, I assume it is more of a global issue. I don't know whether it is related in any way, but I have also found that every time I try to copy text the program I am copying from crashes too. This has happened before and was fixed by a simple restart, but appears to be more persistent now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I love my Mac and don't want to have to get a new one because of silly software issues.

Thanks

I have a similar problem, but it's with a MacBook Air and it locks up frequently no matter what I'm doing and it doesn't matter what browser I'm using. Has anyone experienced this and found the cause?? Thanks!

Boot from Install Disk 1 (hold down C key) and then run Disk Utilities > First Aid > Verify HD > Repair (if necessary). The may be volume structure problems.

Second, run OnyX Titanium Software appropriate to your OS version and Repair Permissions, also Maintenance scripts (if relevant). You can also do the RP activity from Disk Utilities but OnyX does a better job.

If the problem(s) persist, it may be time to consider Disk Warrior.

I also had a similar issue, I'm running the latest version of Firefox with the macOS.

It's so, so freaking annoying that I had to resort to Safari of all things to pick out/upload files.

Is there a fix coming?

Welcome to the forum.

Given that you tacked onto a two year old post, I would say that any "fix" has come, or not, by now. What version of macOS are you running and what Mac? Also, what version of FF?

Hello, You're experiencing software instability issues across multiple applications. Try these steps:

  1. Update your MacBook Pro to the latest software.
  2. Boot your Mac in Safe Mode to see if the issue persists.
  3. Use Disk Utility to check your hard drive for errors.
  4. Reset your Mac's NVRAM or PRAM.
  5. Create a new user account to see if the issue continues.
  6. If all else fails, reinstall macOS.
If none of these work, consider getting help from an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider. Remember to back up your data before any major changes.

Hey Jake, you mean 12 year old post :) :)

And now with this latest post, you guys are well ahead of things I guess. :sneaky:

And a fairly decent set of suggested instructions to fix the problem I guess when someone else is searching for some fixes or solutions for the same or similar problems...

But the old classic fix to shutdown wait a bit and reboot was missing that can often fix all kinds of goofy things.

piperthomas4765h, good solution you posted. Don't take this the wrong way but you must check the entry date on the first post of any topic. astrojon originally posted this problem Feb 4, 2010.
farnadez, who may have done a search for the topic, added a new post in 2022 about a similar issue, I guess he found a solution.
I have fallen for this myself a few times so don't let it put you off. Your input may well be valuable to someone today.
