When I launch iTune (latest version on 10.5.8) it seems to spend ages analysing what it calls gapless playback before I can get to use it.

What's causing this?

Cheers

Sounds as if you have set ~ Playing albums straight through.
Do the opposite to info below :)

iTunes Help :
Some CDs, such as live concert albums and classical albums, are meant to be played straight through, with no fading between the songs (or tracks). If you turn on Crossfade Songs (to fade songs in and out), you can have iTunes automatically turn it off when you play these albums.
To override Crossfade Songs for specific songs:
In iTunes, select a song and choose File > Get Info.
Click Options.
Select “Part of a gapless album.”

To change many songs at once:
Command-click the songs.
Choose File > Get Info.
Click Options.
Choose Yes from the Gapless Album pop-up menu.

Sounds like a great answer, I'll try it. Thank you!

Which is ironic seeing as how iTunes has absolutely NO idea of how to play back anything gapless. And no, crossfade is not the answer. It's pretty pathetic. But w/e. I gave up on the whole gapless music playback thing when switching to OS X. If I need proper playback, I plug my iRiver IHP 120 or 140, or my 30 gig iPod Video into one of my audio sources and let ROCKbox have at it.
