iMessage on the iPod?

I don't understand iMessage on a device with no number. My sister (on an iPhone) sent a message, only going into "mail". I tried her number, her email address, the number that has @xxxyyy.com.
Nothing.

I really don't get this.

This is the iPod Touch, been upgraded to show twitter, iCloud, iMessages, etc

Look at Settings > Messages and check "Receive At"

Make sure her email address is listed there. Obviously you won't be able to use her phone number since the iPod Touch doesn't have one, but her email address should work as long as the email is set up properly on the iPod.
