iPhone and Music

My wife has an iPhone 10 that has never had any music on it other than what the phone came with. When she hooked up the phone to her MacBook Pro to use iTunes and download some music from it, she came to this screen below and went no further. She was concerned that it would wipe some or all of the items on the iPhone. She has several hundred photos on our grandkids and contact information that she doesn't want to lose.

I think she can continue and everything will be OK. On the other hand, I don't want cold dinners for the next six months and that's the reason for this posting.

Is she good to go? Or am I in danger of cold food?

Making a backup of her pictures needs to be a top priority here. She should close out iTunes, then open up the Photos app and see if her photos will sync to that.

I'm a bit confused here otherwise. You said the phone never had any music other than "what it came with". These don't come with any music. Did she buy it used and didn't wipe it? Has she ever hooked it up to that Mac or another one, or to another user account on that Mac or another?

Nope, brand new iPhone. Poor choice of words on my part. No music.

iPhone photo backups using finder to MacBook Pro. She admits she hasn't done it in a while - whatever "in a while" is.

If it's a brand new iPhone 10, select "Restore from Backup" (assuming she has a backup). If her backup was made with an older version of iOS than what's already on the new 10, it should update automatically during the restore process. We've done this several times with my phone and my wife's.

And yes, it's always a good idea to have a backup of any photos that you don't want to lose.

Well, if you restore from the last backup dated 4/16/17, you will lose everything between that date and now, so, that doesn't sound right to me. However, if the iPhone was setup using iCloud, from a previous iCloud backup, and all the data is consistent, the "Set up as new phone" means it's the first time being connected to this computer, and it wants to authorize it for trust.

Bob is right. I didn't see that small notation about the last backup being on 4/16/17. You definitely do not want to do that. I would go ahead and set it up as new like Bob indicated above. Just make sure you have a backup of all her photos elsewhere.

How did you do that?

Regardless of if you iPhone being brand new or not, if it was used prior to being connected to iTunes, then on first connect iTunes will ask you to "configure" it. This was how it always was until iOS was able to work independently of iTunes. If you do wish to use iTunes to manage the iPhone, then you should ideally do a backup to iCloud on the device. Then when connected to iTunes, choose to restore from the iCloud backup and iTunes will be happy and the phone will have everything it had on it.

From this point in time, you can choose to backup the iPhone either to iCloud or iTunes.

Definitely back up her phone, then go onto the settings to just double check it worked. It will tell you when it last fully backed up. If the date is correct then she will be fine to carry on with what she was going to do with iTunes.
