Unlikely that you will have that level control over the lens.

Why not? even 3rd party camera apps, preferably free ones?

The f/2.4 aperture is no good in low light, that is why I ask.

Also phones like the Huawei P20 Pro... even without flash they take stunning photos in the night. Are there any settings to adjust on the iPhone that can allow for this? i generally don’t like flash, i feel like it gives the image some noise/uneven texture etc

Taken from Apple and Macworld sites:

One of the new iPhone XS' camera advancements is Smart HDR which helps boost colours, light and detail in difficult lighting conditions. It's on by default, but if you want to manually switch it on or off you can head to Settings > Camera and find the Smart HDR toggle switch.

As far as I know, this is the only setting you can activate/deactivate for dark light situations.

My guess is that Apple is going to hide all the complexities of taking a picture to hit the widest possible audience. I honestly don't know anything about aperture, but I know that I click enough times, one of the pictures will be good.

The Huawei P20 Pro produces the best photos in the dark. Stunning. Massive difference compared to the iPhone XS.
I like iCloud sync and that is why I bought the iPhone XS.

I wish Apple would give users more control over the camera cos sometimes even apple software can make poor judgements lol. Anyone use any third party camera apps that will help with control in low light?

Have you looked in the iTunes App Store? Any camera control app that exists for the iPhone would be there.

There are many but I read somewhere that these are not compatible with the iPhone XS’s camera - as the telephoto lens and smart HDR is not made use of in these apps.

So if anyone knows anybsuch app that makes use of the iPhone’s latest camera

Nothing has changed since that was posted, and probably won't change. If I were you, I would check back at the iTunes store every once in a while to see if any of the camera app developers have figured out how to do what you want.

Or maybe contact a developer(s) for what you're looking for?

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

I don't know if this new Camera+ 2.app would have what you want, but I found it's legacy version did way more than Apple's Camera.app could on my older iPad.

If that's the case, you should check out the APIs available to developers related to the camera and see what kind of control you might have.
