Hi. Just bought a new iPhone SE 128gb for my wife. She's been using a Nokia 6300 and never had a smart phone before! Therefore she hasn't got an Apple ID. I'm just setting up the phone for her and the first problem is when I enter her iCloud email address a message appears ' Your Apple ID could not be created because [email protected] is no longer available. Please choose a new one'. I then realised that she doesn't have an email account but i have her email address as an alias on my account so that her emails can be received on my devices (she's not into tech). So I've removed the alias on my email account but I still get the message, so can't set-up an Apple ID for her using her current email address. Can anyone help with ideas for my next move? Thank you.

Alias accounts cannot ever be used as a person’s email address.

Your wife will have to create her own email address and a very strong password.

Also, as this is your wife’s first ever Apple ID, she will be forced to implement Two Factor Authentication (2FA).

Be prepared for this in advance. Read about it if you haven’t encountered it before. Apple’s own website will explain all about 2FA, setting up, using it etc.

Hi Ian. Thanks for the reply. You say Alias accounts cannot be used as a person's email address. Just to be clear, what I've done today is remove the alias I had on my iCloud email account so that anyone now trying to send an email to my wife using that alias will not be able to do so. So what I'm thinking now is that the alias has been removed so the alias is now non-existent, so shouldn't I now be able to set up an apple ID using 'her [email protected]' as her email address and as her apple ID?

Yes. That’s more or less what I said. Your wife can set up her own Apple ID with her own @cloud email address, her own strong password and she will need 2FA.

Some couples, I’m one such case, use the same Apple ID. This doesn’t suit everyone but can make life easier because everything syncs across all devices.

But if the two of you want independence and privacy, then your Apple ID and hers will have completely different @icloud email addresses and different passwords.

Am I being clear enough - no offence. I just mean does my answer satisfy your requirements?

Hi Jeff - Apple IDs can certainly be baffling and I'm no expert - Ian has already given you some excellent advice - my wife & I use the same Apple ID also, mainly to share purchases (e.g. books) (plus hopefully we have nothing to hide from each other!) - if interested and for others that may be similarly inclined, I just finished the very short and inexpensive Kindle book below (early Dec 2018 pub date) - need to read it again - I've enjoyed the author's writings in the past - for me a worthwhile purchase and have a better understanding of the Apple ID issues and 2FA - Dave :)

If it helps, here's Apple's explanation, and it's FREE, with nothing against the "Take Control" series which are good and often needed to clarify Apple's use of English language as they tend to use it!!

Really...???... forced to implement Two Factor Authentication (2FA)??? And I've read that several times at mac-forums now.

When did Apple start enforcing that requirement??
We sure didn't need nor want any 2FA setup with my wife's iDevices and they works just fine for what she uses them for.

Availability of two-factor authentication for Apple ID
Two-factor authentication is an extra layer of security for your Apple ID designed to ensure that you're the only person who can access your account, even if someone knows your password.

It’s true,Patrick. If it’s your first ever Apple ID, then 2FA is mandatory. If you had one before or are changing your ID, that’s different.

Been that way for a time.

BTW, as it’s just past midnight here in the UK, a very Happy New Year to you all.

Sorry Ian, but I can't find any such info to confirm that with a google search on 'is Apple 2FA mandatory' and a few new local users I know of here have bypassed the suggestion to use it with their recent Apple acquisitions:

is Apple 2FA mandatory

Anyway, All the Best and have a Happy New Year.

Thanks Jake, but the whole issue and implementation seems to be typically Apple scattered policy unclear as so often the case recently.

Anyway... for now...

Happy New Year and have a Great New Year.
