What do people think about the iPhone XR?

I know it hasn't been released yet, but I find the others rather expensive. The XR costs about the same as I paid for my iPhone 6S+

Much more affordable :)

From what I understand it is the same size - basically - as your 6s+. The liquid LCD is supposed to be beautiful but does not have HDR ability. It does have an Aluminum body versus the Stainless steel of the other models but I don't see that as a big deal. Just as I don't find the lack of 3D touch an issue either.

The biggest difference between the models - except for size and type of screen, is the camera. The Xr has a single 12mp camera versus the dual 12mp with telephoto and wide angle. For me I wanted the new camera features so I got the Xs Max. It takes amazing pictures and video. But not everyone wants or needs all those features.

It is still an awesome phone and well worth the upgrade over your 6s+. And you will get Face ID and an edge to edge screen which is amazing.

I'm going to be upgrading my 6S and was looking at the Xr, but T-Mobile has a $200 if I trade in my 6S against the Xs, so I may just do that instead. I don't care about the missing 3D touch since I barely use it on my 6S and the camera doesn't matter much to me. But since I'm upgrading about 3 generations, I figure I should with the best model and keep that for at least 3 or so years.

Exactly! With the $200 buy back on your current phone and the extra features on the XS, that's the way to go. Enjoy, my friend.

They’re not including the “fast” charging cable and charger, the “standard” are both included.

A couple of thoughts:

1. I have a beard. At present this is quite long and bushy. Eventually, it will be trimmed down to little more than stubble. Will the Face ID thingy work with that?

2. At present, either my iPhone 6S+ or the iPhone SE can be used with Apple Pay. I hold the phone close to the card reader and apply my thumb to the Home Button to scan my fingerprint. Will I be expected to hold the phone close to my face as well as against the card reader in order to use my face instead of the fingerprint? The fingers are more convenient - being at the end of my arms :)

Also, Apple only offered £125 exchange for my iPhone 6S+, which seems very little for a fully functioning phone in good condition. Maybe one of the Cash Converter places or eBay might offer more.

Whats the difference? My phone charges from, say 30%, to 100% in less than an hour.

I don't own the iPhone X and above phones yet, but from what I've read and heard, the face ID does work pretty well in most cases. They map your face to figure out the various components of it and use that to recognize you. This mapping should technically ignore your hair, beard and so on because they use multiple types of sensors that "see" past all that.

The only time I've heard people having issues is immediately after they wake up and perhaps if their face is swollen or otherwise "different".

I suppose if it can cope with women either in makeup or not, it should cope with my long and bushy beard or long stubble :)

I owned the X and now the Xs Max.

1. Face ID - works regardless of makeup or no makeup - a beard in nothing! To add to that I had to have a tooth removed and my face was a bit swollen but that did not stop my Xs max from recognizing me! You have to be looking at the phone for it to work. If you are not it does not recognize you which may be why it recognized my poor swollen face! I do wonder if it maps the eye or retina???

2. Apple Pay - When you get ready to pay you glance at your phone, click the power button, then move it to the pay scanner(?) and it works. A small disclaimer - I have not used apple pay since iOS 12 came out and I have noticed some changes in how things are approved - like adding a new app.

Thanks Lisa - I think that answers my questions.

We will see what my pension can afford when the Xr comes out :)

All the info I've seen indicates that it maps your entire face and contours. But it tracks your eye to know when you to unlock. When the phone is woken up it's constantly mapping and recognizing your face but won't unlock util you look at it so that it's an expected action on your part.

I thought it might also map the shape of the eye but I did realize it was not scanning my retina - knowing apple that will be the next upgrade! ;D

Nighthawk4, I've use the XS for purchases and all it takes is for you to double click the side button, unlock the phone by looking at it, then you have several seconds to move it to the scanner to pay. No need to keep your face near the scanner at all. Actually, it's much easier than the older technology.

From About Face ID advanced technology page
The TrueDepth camera captures accurate face data by projecting and analyzing over 30,000 invisible dots to create a depth map of your face and also captures an infrared image of your face.

So no doubt that it's also mapping out the structure/size/shape of your face, nose, mouth and whatever else to uniquely identify the make up of your face without relying on frivolous things like make up, moustache, beard, tattoos and other cosmetic things. Now, I wonder how it deals with facial piercing and if it ignores that as well.

I wear glasses and it unlocks with them on or off, and with sunglasses instead of my regular ones. Actually, I'm impressed with how fast and accurate it really is. It even unlocked the other night in my car in the dark when I looked at the screen head on. It was in a holder being used for streaming music and I wanted to change, so at a light, I looked at it and it unlocked immediately. (Not legal in some Canadian provinces.)

I have found it to be very accurate in the light or as Jake said in dark venues. Jake - from what I understand, in Canada looking at your Smartwatch while driving is also illegal as it falls under the distracted driver laws.

Seriously, I do agree too many people are using their phones waaaaay too much when driving. I just cringe when I see someone with their phone in one hand and talking away while using the other hand to navigate a turn. I could go on and on but I will suffice to say driving and phone use has gotten out of hand. :Grimmace:

Well, Lisa, the story about the woman getting a $400 fine for looking at her  Watch at a traffic light is what triggered my comment. In that province, if you "interact" with a screen like that, it's a violation. So for those Canadians, the ability of the X line to unlock when you look at it could lead to a significant fine if a policeman is behind you and sees it wake up. My advice is don't put it where it can see your face, or when you turn to look at traffic it could see you looking at it and wake up.

Have you been in the driver's seat of any of the new 2018 and 2019 autos with all the gadgets on the dashboard? The dash looks like an airplane cockpit. Lots of new stuff there to distract drivers, let alone an iPhone. :)
