iPhone 4S in 2018?

I was at the mall today and accidentally left my iPhone SE on a bench because I was in a rush to meet someone.
It wasn't until I went in my bag to get my phone to call someone that I noticed I didn't have it.
I went down to the Mall Security Lost & Found and had been told it hadn't been handed it.
Find My iPhone says the phone is offline.

A college friend offered me his old iPhone 4S free. But how is it in 2018? Would apps like Instagram, Facebook & Snapchat still be usable? Or do they require at least iOS 10?
The phone is free so I can't complain. I also have a Samsung S4 Mini as a backup.
I'd like to hear your thought and opinions (Although they're the same thing really, aren't they?)

The newest iOS an iPhone 4s can run is iOS 9. You would need to check each individual iPhone app you plan on running to determine whether or not iOS 9 will be new enough.

Even if the apps you want to run are available now on IOS 9 it is a short-term solution at best. Newer apps, and I think updates to those you are using, will not run on that phone.

The question you posed has been answered; but if I may, I'd like to offer some advice regarding your lost iPhone SE.

Please give this article some thought. It explains what to do in your situation.

Even if the phone is lost for good (or found and kept i.e. stolen), you need to protect your data and your ID etc.

This is what I really dislike about iPads & iPhones...or maybe it's more about Apple & the App Store. When you go to get an app...many times it's the newest version of the app (which requires the lastest iOS version). There may have been an older version of the app that worked with older iOS versions...but it's no longer there. And if it's a brand new app (no older version)...it requires the newest iOS (no provision for older iOS's).

Compare this to the way computers & new OS versions have always worked...there usually were provisions for with newer app versions or brand new apps to many times have some backwards compatibility.

The way apps for iPhones & iPads seem to work are...it forces us to purchase newer hardware many times much before the older hardware is really obsolete. There is some of this with computers too...but not as bad as with iDevices.

I agree with Susan and Nick - I couldn't play a game I loved on an iPhone 4 until I got the 5s ! Ugh

Btw since your q has been answered, fyi, the iPhone 4S is likely to run very slowly. My mum's does. Takes about half a minute to open an app. Rumoured lately to be due to older batteries, but that's another story

You're right Nick. The only way I have found to see older versions of IOS apps is to go on to the App Store on an older device. It used to show the older apps that ran on that device. Haven't done things that way in a while though so it may not still work.
