I think I have the fix for this issue. Apparently when apple shipped the Iphone 4 they shipped it with 2 different SIM cards. One short SIM card and the other a bit longer. The longer SIM card touches the SIM tray which causes it to ground out. All you have to do is go back where you bought it and request a short SIM card. This is an image of the large and the small SIM card.

No SIM

I've had this problem also. Each time, I pop the SIM card tray out and then back in again and it fixes it for a while, but the error randomly occurs again periodically. Pretty annoying. Rebooting seems to work too, in case you don't have a paper clip handy when you need it. It's nice that you don't need a stylus to use this device, but yet you need a paper clip to take a phone call. Wacked.

No Sim

Having the same problem as everyone else. Called Apple and they suggested reseting network settings. Settings>General>Reset>Network setting. We'll see if that helps. Found the earlier post interesting on the short vs long sim card. If the network reset doesn't work I'm going to go to ATT and request the short sim.

I have the short SIM card and I'm having the issue. Therefore, replacing your long SIM card with the short one will not necessarily fix the problem. It still appears that it's possible the *side* of the SIM card makes contact with the SIM tray. However, I'm not sure that this is a SIM card issue as power cycling and airplane mode toggling can temporarily fix the problem. That makes me lead to think this is a software issue. I've got a reservation with the Apple store today to see what they say and I'll post back if there's any news.

no sim card installed

This is crazy. My husband & I got 2 iphone 4's last Thursday. Mine's fine - his keeps popping up with the sim message. If it was software, I suspect many others would have the problem. I think it's the phone. We'll be visiting the "geniuses" when they can fit us in.... I think asking for a replacement phone may be the best solution (assuming the new one doesn't do this, too). I'm confused that some people resolved it with a new sim, but others didn't. I hope it is software; then at least an update can resolve it. If not, it's got to be faulty units, no?

Good to hear. At first I thought it was my SIM, which was short as well, so I got a new one to see if that fixed the problem. Nothing. So I called AT&T and they told me to go to the AT&T store... and now they are sending me to Apple! I'm pretty mad, but do you guys think Apple can do anything about it? I hope they give me a new phone. What do you guys think?

I took my phone with its "No SIM Detected" error into the Apple store on Friday. The Apple Genius guy took a look at it, saw the error repeat a couple times, and replaced my phone with a new one. He took the SIM card out of my bad phone and put it into the new phone. I was a bit worried but I've used the phone all weekend and have not seen the issue again.

Conclusions: It's an issue with the phone and not with the SIM card. Have your iPhone replaced and you should be all set.

Make sure the contacts on the SIM aren't coming in contact with the SIM tray itself. This could cause a short which would display "no SIM". If the contacts are touching the SIM tray then use a small amount of electrical tape to cover the metal on the SIM tray that is touching the SIM card.

I had the sim card error today, and just got my phone yesterday. I tried powering on and off several times, plus switching airplane mode on and off a few times, with no luck. After popping out the sim card with a paperclip (it takes a decent amount of force), it worked for me. It looks like the metal on the sim card just barely touches the metal from the tray, so that could be the problem like others have mentioned.
