I re-cycled an older mini into a server for my home theater. It's "headless" but the TV acts as the monitor for it. Even if you don't have a theater, you could use it with your TV as a server fro streaming. And I have a very old iMac serving as my home automation controller. So there are lots of uses for equipment that operates but which has been replaced.

Thanks Jake - I do have an Apple TV and AirPlay from my laptops/iPads, both audio and video - guess that the old Mini 4 could be used assuming the aging hardware is adequate? My idea to use as a 'database' for recipes would also be an option for us (have a great app called Paprika w/ many of our recipes) - BUT, I've boxed it up and will send to the place linked in my last post tomorrow - could still get a 100 bucks unless their people also find some 'internal' issue? Dave :)

Update - Success!

Well, always worth a second try! Just received the email below and will be getting $110 for the old Mini 4 - must have checked out fine - price only 10 bucks different from what Apple had estimated but failed to deliver! Dave :)

That is great! So glad it worked out for you. Still very weird that Apple’s evaluator claimed damage and IWM did not find any??? Makes you wonder if they have a rejection quota and you were the one picked to meet that tech’s rejection requirement....hum....

Hi Lisa - well, as already stated before, the iPad worked fine and looked new on the outside after a little gentle cleanup - but I agree in view of the later acceptance at the amount suggested, i.e. no deductions, that the Apple people may have had a pile of Minis and time to assess so many? Obviously, a guess but Apple never got back to me about 'why' the device was rejected. Dave

I do not trust the "mail in" trade in procedure that Apple uses. As stated before, Apple techs are not involved in the evaluation. Dave's iPad rejection is not unusual according to anecdotes that can be found on the web. It's always best to take your trade in item direct to an Apple Store (if possible) and have them evaluate it on the spot.

A third party such as "itsWorthMore" actually is more critical of an item for trade in because they also act as a reseller of used items. Since they agreed to give Dave $110.00 for his old iPad Mini, that shows how chancy it is when sending in an item direct to Apple.

Anyway, thanks to Dave, we can learn from his experience.
