G'day,

Just purchased a 'new' 2015 computer running 10.15.1 iTunes is no longer...now it's "Music". Never an issue previously, however, now when I plug in my iPad running 9.3.6 or my iPhone 8 plus running 12.4.1 , neither appear as the typical little 'box' icon. So, I don't have access to either device through 'music'.

Is there something I'm missing? Is there a new way to get music onto phones? I am also wanting to get A LOT of pdf's and books onto the iPad without having to email them all to myself and opening them and saving them to 'ibooks'. Anyone know a more efficient way to do that? I feel like in the past, with iTunes, I was able to drag them into the ipad 'region' and they'd copy.

Support appreciated.
thanks,
david

I'm not running Catalina (still on Mojave) but here is what we have been told:

Both your iPad and iPhone should appear as attached devices in the Finder side bar. Can you see them there?

Also, it appears your iPad may be quite old if you can only run iOS 9.3.6 on it; that might be part of the problem. However, your iPhone 8 should be updated to iOS 13.2.3 which is the latest version of iOS.

Thanks for the response...yep, I totally understand what 'should' occur...but alas, that is not what is happening. They are not showing up anywhere...as they have on my older computer...I can try to update the phone, but even still, it should be seen by Music....any other thoughts?

I'm going to have to experiment a bit. I have Catalina installed on a bootable SSD but have not really looked at the new Music app. I'll try to get back to you to see what happens when I attach my iPhone and iPad during the Catalina session. I can't run Catalina on my prime Mac for now since I have a 32 bit app that I need which won't work with Catalina.

Hello Pothypine - my Macs are on Catalina and both my iPhone & iPad Pro are iOS/iPadOS 13.2.3, so what I'm about to illustrate may not apply to your iOS devices on the older iOS versions. I cabled my iPad Pro to my MBAir (which does not have much music - my 'travel laptop'); opened 'Music' on the laptop and the iPad is recognized (first pic circled in blue) - then dragged a Bach recording to the iPad which transferred (next 2 pics). Clicking on the iPad icon produces pic 4, i.e. a listing of the songs on the device, PLUS a 'Sync Settings..' option - the latter opens the iPad in Finder (pic 5) w/ the similar options that use to show up in iTunes.

Now, this is my first attempt to use 'Music' to transfer files between devices which seems to work as described (probably depending in part on the operating systems installed) - if you cable your iDevices to a Catalina computer and open Finder, then you'll have the image in the last pic below. Hope this helps and gets you started; again I cannot guarantee you will see the same pics w/ your setup? Dave :)

@pothypine:

I just a bit ago booted to Catalina 10.15.1 using my external Samsung T5. My results are the same as member "RadDave"; both of our iPhones immediately appeared in the Finder sidebar and I was able to pretty much do the same with the Music app that I formerly did using iTunes. We have an iPhone 8 and 7+ both running iOS 13.

I suspect your iPad running iOS 9.3.6 is not compatible with the new music app in Catalina. However, your iPhone 8 when updated to the latest version of iOS 13.2.3 should be okay.

@pothypine

I've just spent the last 10 minutes visiting a miscellany of websites regarding "Music" in macOS Catalina and all of them "imply" the need for iOS 13. None categorically states this as a requirement, but all of them illustrate their articles using iOS 13.

Obviously, your iPad is a non-starter; but it very strongly looks like you have to upgrade your iPhone 8 to iOS 13.2.3 - (which in my personal opinion you should do anyway for the security benefits as well as the additional features).

@pothypine, do you get the "Trust Computer" prompt on either devices? Are you using a genuine Apple Lightning cord? Sometimes there are issues with after market cords? Are the devices still synced with the other computer?

Edit: to add on to this, my daughter has an iPhone 6 that I sync to my MacMini.

Just a follow-up to Pothypine's questions on Catalina and use w/ iDevices - I decided to explore this cabled connection and the new options in Finder more (since still a novice to this macOS) - again, cabled my iPad Pro to the MBAir and opened Finder - the iDevice is visible in the left column (first pic below) - clicking on the device icon brings up the screen on the right w/ numerous tabs, opening in 'General' - just a note on the 'Backups' options - two radio buttons exits to backup either to the Cloud or to the computer - I've not explored these fully since I'm always doing Cloud backups on my iDevices and use iMazing as a complement to 'fuller' backups - but a recent MacRumors Article explains for those interested.

As to the 'Music' tab (see second pic), I've never liked to 'sync' my computer's music files w/ my iDevices, just seem somewhat idiosyncratic regarding adding/erasing files, SO I do not have the sync option checked; BUT, for those who want to explore this Finder alternative to transferring music then try - I'd probably start w/ 'Selected artists etc' as a safer introduction, but only a guess. For those who do use this Sync tab, please post back your results - may help others. Dave
