Being very new to all this I have used wifes iPad some. Mostly quick internet lookup's for something.
Question: Having an iMac & iPad do you find yourself using your iPad much?

Two very difference devices meant for very different things. For most people, the iDevices are a content consumption device whereas the Macs support content creation in a useful manner as well.

I have an iPad Mini that I used at home to play games or streaming for. I also use it for reading books or news, but I wouldn't want to use it to actually create anything.

I use my iPad Pro, while away from my mini. Either at home or while away, it is handy to have.

@Kenny:

My iPad Pro is used as a backup to my iMac and like others have said, when away from home. What I like most about it is the great battery life when compared to my iPhone. :)

Thanks guys, my brother keeps suggesting it would be a good addition to my iMac &iPhone. I do enjoy using the wife’s but sometimes hard to get from her. Not having to boot up pc just to look up something is a definite advantage. Was just curious how many folks use them. Good point Ashwin about the uses, wasn’t looking at that point. Still need other stuff first but maybe down the road. Thanks again guys.

iPads (and iPhones)...great for:

- checking email
- internet surfing
- online banking
- watching videos
- listening to music
- social networking
- etc.

Especially if you're horizontal on the couch...or curled up in your favorite easy-chair.

And good lord...absolutely awesome for long (or short) plane flights (and time in the airport)!:)

I prefer to watch vids, especially movies, on my MacBook. I don't understand how people can enjoy watching vids on a smaller screen

I would think it would be a bit difficult to carry a 27" iMac on an airplane to comfortably watch a movie during the flight. ;D Another thing to remember about an iPad is that for the most part, they get much better battery life than the best Mac portable. I have no problem watching videos or movies on my 10.5" iPad Pro. Can't say the same thing about my iPhone though. LOL.

Patrick, we live in a different world. People would watch a film on their watch if they could - perhaps they can; I don't have an iWatch....

I see it on buses, trains, even in supermarket shopping queues. It saves having to think; or perhaps engage with fellow human beings - other than digitally of course.:Mischievous:

I'm talking about MacBook. MacBooks have fairly good battery life.

Hmmm... I forgot about those iPad models, and maybe you would like to trade me for my iPad 2 model. ;D

Yup, and no doubt they have better eyesight and/or much stronger eyeglass lenses than I do, and no doubt a different interest in what I would call a decent, watchable movie. :Smirk:

But, thankfully there's other good stuff besides movies to keep one engrossed or interested.

I use iBooks to read, well, books, on my first generation iPad. That's about all it's good for these days. (photos and mail and calendar work ok too, but browsing and most apps - nope) Hope to get a new one after Christmas. Then I'll netflix and youtube and more.

In 2011, started w/ an iPad 2, then an iPad Air 2 in 2014, and as of yesterday, a NEW 11" 256GB iPad Pro 2018, i.e. no home button and a UBS-C port - restored from an iCloud backup of the Air 2 - took a while to get all of my apps back but only a couple of minor glitches - also have 2 older Apple laptops that do not have the USB-C connection (a.k.a. Thunderbolt 3), so have ordered some USB-C -> USB cables so I can use iTunes and iMazing.

Also, agree w/ Nick's listing above - I use for all of those reasons (except banking - wife does that on our iMac) and also a few simple games (e.g. Sudoku, Free Cell, & Solitaire); works well for quick email checking & web surfing - also watch videos (e.g. Old Yankee Workshop w/ Norm and Ask This Old House) while on my treadmill, plus stream Netflix and Amazon to an Apple TV - while traveling, great for the airport as already mentioned; plus, I have a LOT of music on an old iPod Touch that I take on trips to pair w/ a small BT speaker (i.e. music 'on the road') - plan to transfer most of that music (now on my MBPro) to the new iPad cabled to iTunes and will then leave the iPod at home.

As to reading, have purchased plenty of books (both Apple's Books app & the Kindle app) and do much of my reading on a pad - still like an occasional real paper book (i.e. the feel and smell of a new book!). Being retired, I don't need the device for 'production' work - have always disliked typing a lot w/ the on-screen KB (have often used a BT Apple KB which works well but now also carry my MBAir while traveling, if I need to type) - BOTTOM LINE for me is that I look at the laptop-iPad combination as a complementary team. Dave :)

I pretty much have not touched my laptop since i got my first generation iPad Pro 9.7 inch model, and now that my boyfriend got me the first generation iPad Pro 12.9 with the Logitech backlit Smart Keyboard, i don’t think i will be touching the laptop again unless it is very little.

OK - I have an iPad Pro and still use my Apple laptops - what is your point and/or question(s)? Dave :) BTW - welcome to the forum!

I still would take my 13 inch MacBook Pro to work with me along with my 9.7 iPad Pro, since I got the 12.9 inch iPad Pro, Friday night, and have played with it all weekend, writing this post on it now, I don’t think I will be taking both devices with to work, worse case is I won’t be as productive at the office which is just fine. I think it will be just fine though and it is much lighter to carry around as well.

I made the decision to go with the 12.9 inch iPad Pro for my business. In addition to all the great ways people have mentioned above how they use their iPads, here are some of the reasons why I made the decision to buy my iPad and how useful I have found it to be:
-I am able to review PDFs and images when I am on the jobsite on a fairly large screen when compared to just a phone screen.
-When performing as-built tasks, it is beneficial to take pictures and then annotate them while I’m on site so that I capture all the relevant information that I might need.
-When speaking with a builder or subcontractor, having this form factor makes displaying plans or images much easier than having to hold a laptop.
-When making edits or other work in my truck, I can position the iPad in ways that are not as convenient as it would be with a laptop because the keyboard is rigidly mounted to the display screen on a laptop.
-Sometimes, I’ll take even higher quality pictures with my (also new) iPhone 11 Pro Max and airdrop them directly to the iPad so that I can perform annotations and editing within moments.

The effortless ecosystem is a huge benefit in maximizing the efficiency of my jobsite work flow.
