After stretching my old iPad2 until it was almost impossible to open some email, I picked up an iPad Air 2 on eBay. It's in absolutely beautiful condition. I picked up a cheap "smart case" on AMZ and everything seemed to be fine, but it would unlock when I opened it and lock when i folded the cover around and I touched the back. I figured, "that's what you get with a cheap cover". Just got a Product RED cover, slipped the pad in and voila, same problem. Is this a wide-spread problem? I guess i can live with the lock turned off, but I tend to close the cover and forget to turn it off.

Are you sure you're installing the covers correctly so that the cover's magnet engages properly to the iPad's magnet when it's in the closed position??

You can use the cover's magnet or any small magnet to detect where the activating magnet on the iPad is located.

Also check the Settings for how you want it to work or not.

For more, try here for suggestions if you need them.

EDIT:
If you want to get really techy, you can find the position of the iPad magnets here, which is actually a lot more work than using a small refrigerator magnet!!!: ;D

PS: Of course the other possibility is that it's just plain broke and doesn't work and maybe a reason as to why it was sold???

I kinda think it’s just broke. Everything else works perfectly, tho. I guess I can live with it.

I think that's how it's supposed to work. At least my so-called Smart Cover works that way on my iPad Pro and my wife's iPad Air 2.

Just one point: when you say it would "unlock" when you opened it, I presume you mean you got the screen with the time and date on it, but still needed to input your passcode to actually unlock it??

I cannot conceive of a way that any attachment or case could bypass the true unlocking process (passcode or fingerprint in appropriate models).

Sorry, Ian, I mis-spoke. When I open the cover, the screen comes on. I still have to unlock it. I was just expecting the the Air2 to behave the same as my Mini 2 and iPad 2 , except they don't have touch ID.

Very kind of you to post back, cubbykc.

That's what I presumed. And, as I said, what you are seeing is what I get as well.

Hmmm…??? Personally I'd do some more checking, investigation and testing, but I'm a bit persistent and stubborn that way.

And google sure has lots of hits on the same problem:
https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q="iPad+Air+2"+smart+lock&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

But these two are quite interesting and it seems that even Apple's Smart Covers are model specific:

Do you have a small magnet that you could use to test the switch?? If not, any $Store should have some.

What member "cubbykc" is experiencing is normal. I get the same thing with my 10.5" iPad Pro.

Just making sure I am understanding your first post. So when you lift the cover from over the screen it lights up. This is the part that I am confused about, are you saying when you fold the smart cover back so you can use the iPad the screen turns off like covering the screen with the cover? You said back so I am wondering as my Air and Pro 10.5" and Apple smart cover does not do that when folding it back so I can use it.

As I flip the cover open, the screen lights up. When I flip it all the way around so it comes in contact with the backside of the pad, it shuts off as if I have closed it.

Ahh... That's not right unless the cover is not aligned right and the magnets are touching simulating a close. I certainly didn't pick that up from the first post. Well done Dennis T.

Just a another thought but why not just purchase a case instead of the cover for that iPad Air 2 that just may work better and the way you want???

Like Ian, I didn't read that from his first post. As I have the smart keyboard cover for my 10.5" iPad Pro, it definitely does not act that way. When my iPad Pro locks into place on the smart keyboard cover (magnetic) I then have to press the side button to activate it (turn it on) when it's off. However, when it's sleeping pressing the home button wakes it up.

Closing the smart keyboard cover over the iPad Pro should put it to sleep. Pressing and holding the side button is only used to turn it off.

As I flip the cover open, the screen lights up. When I flip it all the way around so it comes in contact with the backside of the pad, it shuts off as if I have closed it.

That indicates something is wrong with the cover or the iPad.

I wonder if any of this is related???:

iPad Pro 9.7 Doesn't Work with iPad Air 2 Smart Covers - Magnetic polarity shift!
Apple's new iPad Pro 9.7 has the exact same dimensions as the prior iPad Air 2 - a magnet change forces customers to purchase a more expensive smart cover when upgrading from the Air 2 See more iPad at http://lon.tv/ipad

The cover fits the Pro 9.7 exactly as it does on the Air 2. But -- Apple changed the polarity of the magnet on the new device, forcing those upgrading from the iPad Air 2 to buy new Smart Covers that cost $10 more than the ones for the iPad Air 2!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyWZVZrYAmI

I guess one has to really check what exact cover model one has.
