So, my wife's iPhone is chewing up our data on the cell plan. It appears to be coming from a video teaching event she is watching on Safari. The weird thing is that she is in the house and connected to the WiFi. While looking around I found a setting on the WiFi network called "Low Data Mode".

Will this stop Safari from using the Cell network when it's in the house?

Turning on low data mode in the WiFi settings will not affect cell phone data usage. That’s for data on a limited WiFi plan - think satellite service. Easiest way to stop usage of cellphone data is to go to Settings -> Cellular -> and turn off Cellular data. Do this when you are home on your WiFi service. You can then toggle the setting back on when not on your home WiFi.

If the phone is on WiFi, it will not use any cellular data. The WiFi connection is automatically preferred over cellular. One possibility is that your might not have good WiFi coverage where the device is being used and it might be dropping back to cellular. But Lisa's suggestion will ensure that you only use WiFi or nothing at all.

Ok, then I'll turn the Low Data Mode back off. I suspect the wifi coverage in that part of the house is not the best. I did not know the phone would automatically switch over to cell data if the wifi was deemed "too weak". I'll have to put a wifi extender in that area. Thanks....

The cellular connection is always on, whereas the WiFi comes and goes. But mobile devices are designed to use WiFi when available and route all traffic that way and then route to cellular when the WiFi drops with little to no noticeable user difference. If you are watching a full-screen video without the top bar, you would not easily know that the WiFi has dropped and you are on cellular.

Ashwin - Good catch! I forgot about low signal strength. A booster will help. My internet service drops a lot - so much I added unlimited data to my cellphone plan! I do notice my devices switching between WiFi and cellular data. The price I pay for rural living...sigh....:Grimmace:

Thanks Lisa, I was speaking from practical experience whereby I had pretty bad coverage in my house with the access point being in one corner of the basement and having bad cellular coverage, so I was relying on WiFi Calling to get by, but when that became unreliable, I added extenders to help out.

Lisa, I ticked up his rep for you. It was a great reminder.

Thanks Jake, points, points, more points. :)
