This just seems very odd to me.

I have been reading a history book (Freedom From Fear) on an iPad mini with relatively long chapters. The average chapter length in time is something like 1 hour 20 minutes or so and I have been keeping track of where I was in the chapter by checking the remaining time. All of this worked very well until yesterday afternoon when I checked how much time was left in the chapter and saw 1 minute.

Since I was only about halfway through the chapter I knew this was wrong and skipped forward to the start of the next chapter to check the time for that one. Again, 1 minute. I then skipped back to some of the earlier chapters, which I knew to be well over an hour, and found 1 minute.

I shut down the Kindle app and restarted it. 1 minute. I shut down the Kindle app and rebooted the iPad. 1 minute. I loaded another book and found the chapter times correct, reloaded the original book and check again. 1 minute. No matter what I did I kept getting 1 minute (or in one case, 2 minutes). I thought I would remove and reinstall the Kindle app but it was late and I decided to wait until the next day (which was today). Today I loaded the book and checked and, lo and behold, 1 hour and 13 minutes in the chapter.

So the problem, whatever it was, seems to have gone away but I am left wondering what this might have been and what to do if it happens again. Has anyone else seen this? And, if so, does he or she have any answer as to what the problem is and how to fix it? My iPad is running 13.3 so I have not upgraded to the latest iOS version.

Any book you're reading should open at the same place as you left off, whether you shut down the Kindle app or not or read something else before returning. Does this not work for you?

Yes. That works properly. Perhaps I was not clear in my post.

The app opens the book at the same page location what was last open when the Kindle app was closed. All of the bookmarks are correct. The search function works correctly. I can go to any chapter I want properly. Everything works correctly except the indication of how much time remains in the chapter. When I check to see the remaining time (either by checking the bottom of the page or pressing on the screen to show how much time remains) the display says only 1 minute remains in the chapter even though I was perhaps 30 or 40 or 50 pages from the end of the chapter and another hour of reading remains.

As I said this functionality is now working properly, but nothing I could do yesterday seemed able to fix it. It is just very puzzling.

Mike,

As you undoubtedly know, at the bottom left of the Kindle window, you can tap on the info and change it to - nothing - Loc - hours left in book - time left in chapter.

If this happens again, maybe tapping on that and scrolling through the options will restore it to normality?

Thanks. I should have tried that.

If it happens again I will see if it makes any difference and will post the result.

OK. Changing the value at the bottom of the Kindle page did not work.

The problem has reoccurred but, oddly enough, with a completely different book. The original book now is working properly but a second book now has the same problem with the listed time. Cycling through the values at the bottom of the Kindle page did nothing to fix the issue.

My next step will be to update iOS to the latest version for the iPad. I have avoided this up until now by not wishing to introduce new issues when everything was working. but since I now have this annoying problem I will see if the update will fix it. I don't expect it to since it is probably an issue with the Kindle app, but if I just file a bug report against the Kindle they will probably just tell me to update the OS anyway.

And upgrading iOS also did not solve the problem. I think the next thing to do is to submit a Kindle app if I can find the Amazon location for submitting bug reports.

Mike:

Do you have the same problem using the macOS version of the Kindle App? I have used both the iOS version and the macOS version and from my experience with both, the iOS version has always been a bit buggy. And lots of luck with reporting the bug to Amazon. That is, if you can even find out where to submit it.
