Apple releases iOS and iPadOS 13.2.3

It has only been 11 days since Apple released iOS 13.2.2, but once again we're seeing evidence of a greatly increased update cadence. Today sees the release of iOS and iPadOS 13.2.3.
This latest release is mostly a bug fix update—of course, that was apparent from the version number. Traditionally, Apple numbers its updates to signify their importance. Top-level updates like iOS 12 or iOS 13 are annualized major releases that start a new update cycle. One decimal point down (like iOS 13.2) denotes an update that adds major new features. One further point down (like this one, iOS 13.2.1) usually indicates that it is a bug fix update.
The update this week fixes problems users have encountered with search in the Mail, Files, and Notes apps. It also addresses a bug with attachments in Messages, an issue that stopped apps from downloading properly, and another with Exchange accounts under Mail that has frustrated many users.

I wish there was a way to nominate one’s main iPad and iPhone so these can have the insidious update prompts disabled. That way I can ensure I retain at least one device on which I can use Reminders and Mail.

You would need to turn off Automatic Updates, under Settings > General > Software Update in iOS/iPadOS 13. I don't remember where it was in iOS 12.

Thanks. Not gone that far yet. I realise I will have to update eventually, once I find a satisfactory replacement for the Reminders App.

I can cope with the extra difficulty in updating in the App Store and in flagging emails in the Mail App but I use Reminders every day so I need it to work reliably and as far as I can see since iOS13 it doesn’t

Reminders only doesn't work if you don't have Catalina on your Mac. I've been using it since iOS/iPadOS 13 was released. And it's been working better since Catalina (15.2) & iOS/iPadOS 13 (.2). But if you are not upgrading (or already upgraded) to Catalina, then find another app to use in it's place.

The 13.2.3 applied without much of an issue, via iTune after backing up the iPhone 8 Plus.

My only issue is that the Wi-Fi was enabled after the iPhone started up. It's not just this update, every other updates enable the Wi-Fi connection, that I don't use. This is just annoying and would prefer, if the update would fix the "Do not disturb while driving" feature instead. The activate automatically still does not work....

Why is that an issue? I would think that keeping WiFi on for calls is a good thing to have? I keep mine on at all times and find that it actually reduces battery drain when I'm at home. When out and about it's more likely that cellular use is in play.

I should add that we have unlimited data and texts with our plan.

My cell plan also has unlimited data, text, etc., as well. I only use Wi-Fi at home, when the update requires it; even then, most of the times the update is done via iTunes on my MBP. With unlimited data plan, I see no need for the Wi-Fi, with constant 4G connections being always active.

If you have the Wi-Fi always on, iOS constantly scans for available wireless network and try connecting to wireless access points or AP. During this process, the AP gets the iPhone's MAC address. These APs do upload devices MAC addresses, that connected and/or attempted to connect to them. Even the Map apps on iPhone wants to turn on Wi-Fi for more accurate location and this is the reason.

Wi-Fi is also used for tracking your location and can be used for advertisements when shopping at a mall. It's less likely to take place on iPhones, unless Google apps, like Chrome, etc., are active.

WiFi improves GPS performance so leaving I on is the recommended way to go. In Settings, WiFi, set "Ask to join networks" to "Ask" and the searching seems to be reduced. The reason GPS is better with WiFi is that the ephemeris is kept more up to date than happens with only the GPS and no WiFi.

As for ads at a mall, that's more like BlueTooth location following than WiFi. And I've never seen an ad pop up on my iPhone at any mall I've been in, so it must be a Google-related thing (I have zero Google products on my iPhone.)

Is it messing up for you all the time or just intermittently? My wife says it usually works for her and has worked for me when I test it as a passenger in the car.

I have it off on my phone because I don't drive. With it turned on the warning activates as I roll through the building at work in my wheelchair.

The "Do Not Disturb" while driving is supposed to activate automatically by detecting driving motion. Or if you have "Car Play", you can set it up that way. I can understand that it won't always work by detecting driving motion and depends on the type of car and driving.

I can guarantee that it definitely will detect motion in my Mustang. LOL.

I can guarantee that it definitely doesn't detect motion in my 20 years old pickup truck, that does not have car play; neither does my 24' Robalo fishing boat. My better half's 6s has no issues detecting the motion in either of them, so, it's not a question of vehicle. Rather, it is the iPhone in question and/or its operator... ;D

I started a thread back in September about this:

Do not disturb while driving...

I've tried a number of different settings to no avail; the do not disturb only works, if I enable it manually. Updating to iOS 13.x.x didn't fix this either.

The issue could be with accelerometer and/or the software reading the results. First thing first, I need to find a way for testing the accelerometer. Anybody has an idea for that?

Look for SensorKinetics. It shows the actual readings from the accelerometers in all three axes. It's in the store on the iPhone.
