Mail Delete Not Syncing

I don't know if this is the right forum, but please redirect me if not.

When I delete an email or move an email to a folder on my Mac (apple mail), it doesn't reflect on my iPhone.
On the other hand, if I delete an email or move an email to a folder on my iphone it DOES reflect on my Mac.

This is new behavior. It's worked correctly for years up until now.

The imap settings are correct and have not been changed.
Both devices have the latest OS's.

I messaged through the apple site and they put me on the phone with someone from India whom I couldn't understand. He did say that the process to fix the problem would take over 45 minutes. However, since I couldn't understand much of what he was saying, I declined to go through it with him.

Is there any help any of you can give me on this.

Okay, question one; are you logged in on iCloud on all your devices and is Mail ticked in iCloud Preferences on all devices?
Second, has anything changed recently? eg.
Operating System updates/upgrades.
ISP's
Email account providers or network providers.
Or any performance problems on either device.
I have adopted a saying from a friend of mine who once told me, "If something has changed then something has changed."

You stated you are using Apple Mail on your Mac, are you also using the same Apple Mail apps on your devices?

Nothing changed between the time it worked and the time it stopped working.
iCloud was not ticked on the iphone, but it never has been. That doesn't seem to have any bearing on this.
I ticked it this morning and it hasn't cured the problem.

I use apple mail on all my Macs.
Hotmail is my service.

Hotmail is my service.

I can't speak for Hotmail since it has been years that I used the service. However, with gmail, as long as I'm using IMAP mail syncs properly both ways - Mac to iPhone, iPad and vice-versa. But, if I use my PoP account, syncing is no longer available. In other words, I have to deal with mail over again on all my devices.

I'm not sure if Hotmail even allows a PoP account (many providers no longer use PoP) but you might want to go over all your settings for Hotmail. Do that both in Apple Mail and also from the Hotmail web site.

Lastly, try restarting your iPhone. Not resetting it, but just shut it down and then restart it sort of the same way you would reboot your Mac.

About the only thing that has not been suggested yet, I think, is to log out of iCloud on both the iPhone and the Mac and then sign in again on both.

As the fault occurred spontaneously, this suggests a sync problem and as the syncing is via iCloud, that might sort it.

It could be possible that the problem is/was due to iCloud itself as it seems to have been a bit troublesome lately looking at its offline/problem chart:

Also, Hotmail does not work through iCloud. But it will work with Mail. I can't update my iPad to the new iPadOS yet, so I can't check if there is an issue.

I posted this last evening, but for some reason it didn't take...

I've determined that this isn't a syncing problem between devices. It's a syncing problem between Hotmail and this one device.
I went to outlook.com (=hotmail) and observed behavior between the website and my computer.
When I delete a message from my computer, the same doesn't happen at the web site.
When I delete a message on the website, it DOES happen on the computer.

My iphone and my other Mac work as they should with the web site.

Hope that helps narrow things down a bit.

Thank you for the feedback.

Bob should take some credit because he made oblique reference to this in post 9 when he said that Hotmail doesn’t sync via iCloud.

Still trying to determine why hotmail has trouble syncing only with this one computer.
I think this says the issue is with the apple mail in the computer, but what?

I've checked all the settings.
No settings were changed before the issue presented itself.

This is a new (2019) MacBook Pro that I've had for a couple weeks.
The old one works fine.

This is a new (2019) MacBook Pro that I've had for a couple weeks.
The old one works fine.

This is new information.

If the old MacBook Pro and Hotmail worked well but the new one doesn't, it seems to me that the problem is between the way your new MacBook Pro is setup for mail and the way the old one was. Go over all your settings in Apple Mail to make sure that everything is correct and reflects what you had before with the old Mac.

I've done all that, more than once. The fact is that even the new MacBook worked fine for 2 weeks before it presented this issue. I've never changed any of the email settings.

Well, obviously something has changed otherwise your mail would sync as before. Sorry, I'm out of ideas. Perhaps someone else can think of something that will help.

I agree something has changed, but it seems to me that something has become corrupted. Problem is, I don't know the innards of apple mail well enough to determine what might be zotted and needs replacement. Any guidance along those lines? It does seem that the problem is with the app itself or one of its associated modules.

That sure seems like a weird problem, and I'm not familiar with or use iPhones or syncing, but here's an almost similar situation with a matching weird solution you might want to have a read and at least give it a try:

BTW: Have you tried sending yourself an email and then deleting it to see or check if it works/syncs and deletes etc. properly, as maybe there is something goofy was some of the recent emails themselves preventing things from working properly.

Just a thought but maybe worth checking. :Smirk:

Without reading back through all of the previous posts I assume you have tried deleting the Hotmail account from AM Accounts and re installing it. If you haven't tried it it's worth a shot. It's one of those things that shouldn't really make any difference but sometimes does.
I have both a Hotmail and an @live.com account which are merged and they are "Exchange" accounts I take it yours are the same. Sometimes reinstalling email accounts changes the ports used and although i don't fully understand this it has been known to fix things in the past.
Lastly as stated in the link I posted do have a look at Mail Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors and Server Settings. Ensure they are the same as your older device.
