Since IOS 12 update my iPhone and iPads and those of my wife have suffered amazing battery loss overnight when nothing is running. Typically 100% charged before we retire for the night, 45-50% charge left in the morning. The culprit shows to be Mail. No matter how little we use our devices during the day all need recharging in the evening. iPads range from iPad 2, 4, mini 2 and mini 4 models, iPhones are 5S and SE. I've Googled for answers, unsuccessfully, and check and tried different options for Fetch and Push Mail to no effect. Something definitely got screwed with last update. Does anyone else experience this? Any ideas as to what is going on?

If you get a lot of e-mail and push notification is turned on that can burn a lot of network activity (and thus battery). Here's how to check that setting and change it if need be.

There are a number of other apps which use push notification that can burn more battery life than we realize. As they "phone home" for updated information that means more network activity and battery burned. We had that issue with some weather apps for a while.

Typically we get between zero and one email overnight so not exactly a lot :) Whether Push is on or off seems to make no difference. Presently our phones are set to Fetch Manually. Battery still going down at alarming rate.

Try Airplane mode and see if that helps?

I kinda thought you had checked that possibility before posting but I thought I'd ask just in case.

My wife is having the same issue on IOS 12 but I wasn't having that issue before installing the OS 13 beta. I'll do some more investigating when I have time.

Switching to Low Power mode on the phone has a positive effect. Will leave phone on Airplane mode overnight tonight. Shouldn't really have to resort to such measure though. Remember when it 'just worked'?

I'm sorry, but for me, it does just work. I plug mine in when I'm sleeping. This way when I start the day it's at 100%. I've even plugged it in overnight at 90%.

If that's the case you, and your iPhone's battery, will probably appreciate an apparent change in the way iPhone's charge their batteries. In essence. it seems to monitor your behavior for a few days and adapts the charging cycle to your lifestyle.

If I understand things correctly, rather than spending most of the night at 100% charge, which theoretically shortens battery life, the new method charges the battery to about 80% and holds that level until shortly before you normally need your phone. Then right before you normally need your phone the charge it topped up to 100%. See here

Great Link, Sly.

Very useful info there. Thanks.
