In earlier versions of Word for Mac, I vaguely remember there was a way to make the default single and double curly quotes and apostrophes instead of slashes.

For example, with Times New Roman, I can't find how to switch from slashes to curlies in Preferences, and searching in Help provided no answers.

I'm not using Word 2016 but with Word 2011 you can do that in Preferences, Autocorrect. Press the add button at the bottom and fill in whatever you wish to change. Not sure if that's what you're looking for? I believe there is something in Word help that address that. Look for "smart quotes".

Here's what the Word help says:

Making quotes and apostrophes curly or straight

Use “smart quotes” when you want apostrophes and quotation marks to be curly instead of straight.

To turn smart quotes on or off:

Choose iWeb > Preferences.

Select or deselect “Use smart quotes.”

In iWeb, smart quotes are turned on by default.

Autocorrect in Preferences didn't work for making straight quotes and apostrophes curly.

There is nothing about smart quotes in Help.

What and where is iWeb?

I don't see it in Preferences.

I think this may be what you are after:

Open Word > Preferences > AutoCorrect > AutoFormat as You Type. This is what you get:

You can check/uncheck the box adjacent to the red arrow.

Please tell us if that helps.

The panel that comes up in Word 16.19 is not the one IWT sent but it's similar.

I seriously dislike the presumptuousness of many apps. I checked only the box for smart quotes and apostrophes but then discovered it works only if I check "Automatically correct spelling and formatting as you type," which I don't want the app to do.

But it looks as if I can't get the curlies without getting the auto spell and format feature.
