My wife has an iPhone 7. Running latest version of iOS 12.1.2 The iPhone otherwise works perfectly.

She can receive iMessages, but there is no sound accompaniment. Trouble is intermittent. Say 4 out 5 iMessages received - no sound. Other 20%, there is sound. This is not related to the sender, ie, some from X get sound, others from X don't. Ditto sender Y etc.

    All SMS texts have sound.

What I've done. Shut down. Forced shut down. Switched off iMessage in settings. Then switched on again and reactivated her iMessages.

    Any ideas?

I'd be most grateful for any suggestions.

Ian, is Send as SMS enabled on your wife's iPhone 7? In Settings > Messages? Maybe turn it off, restart iPhone (or maybe force restart?), then enable it again? I don't know if you want to send some Messages, in between turn off and turn on? Do you know if the other users, are using iCloud accounts or not?

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.

Bob, thanks for your interest and response.

is Send as SMS enabled on your wife's iPhone 7?
    Yes.
Do you know if the other users, are using iCloud accounts or not?
Almost impossible to say. By "other users", you mean? If you mean SMS senders, can't say and don't imagine they wouldn't send an iMessage if they had an iCloud account.

All SMS messages arrive with sound.

My wife and I share my Apple ID. That said, this has never been an issue over many years. Her iPad and iPhone as well as my iPhone & iPad and iMac are all "under" my Apple ID. The problem with her iPhone started no more than 3 or 4 weeks ago, max.

SMS Messages in Settings. Maybe turn it off, restart iPhone (or maybe force restart?), then enable it again? I don't know if you want to send some Messages, in between turn off and turn on?
Not done that, but easy to try as an experiment.

Thank you again for all these ideas. I'll post back on the "experiment" re SMS enabled when my wife returns - out shopping (no comment).

In addition to the above, Bob:

My wife has a regular iMessage sender who uses a non-iCloud email address, but presumably must have an iCloud account?? Is that true? I mean can you have an iPhone and send iMessages without an iCloud account?

In any case, some of her iMessages arrive with sound, at least half, don't.

I have, and use, two Apple ID's, I use one account on my iPad Pro Wi-Fi only, and a separate one for my iPhone. My first Apple ID I created for iTunes, and is only my hotmail email address & the other is a newer @iCloud Apple ID. So, the non iCloud email, could still be an iCloud account. I was wondering if there were non iCloud accounts having the issue, or if it was only with iCloud accounts? Any way, this
