I recently got a new phone7. we opted to start as new phone and not trfr info from old phone to new one as I had a passcode for restrictions which I could not remember.

all seemed to be working well but today I discovered that while working on my MAC, the iMessages I have been receiving on my iPhone and iPad are not on the Mac.

emails between the 3 devices work just fine
and also texts for iPhone & iPad.

I googled and looked for some help but have had no luck with various ones. either the replies were not giving as much detail as I need or the options they mention I cannot find.

it seems that message is not synced with contacts as I cannot create a new message on Mac.

can anyone help? maybe it is two issues which are connected....I am sure it is a very simple adjustment.

this is not a critical issues...I work around it but just wonder WHY the texts don't show up.

Lori:

If you need to sync iMessages between your iOS devices and your Mac with iCloud, you must turn on and use 2FA. Contacts should sync okay provided you have that turned in via iCloud.

I logged onto appleid.apple.com....entered apple id and pw...then think at this point was prompted for Code...which I entered on Mac
then later a screen popped up and listed my account and devices and said two factor authentication is on.... I know 2FA is set up on iPhone/ipad but don't know about Mac.

I turned all devices OFF and then back ON....still messages not coming thru.

Lori

I hope I’m not stating the obvious or causing offence, but just wonder you turned on iMessage on your Mac?

What procedure did you follow? Apart from 2FA. Maybe you are missing some part of the process?

You will need to look in System Preferences > iCloud, and make sure Messages is enabled. Then, in Messages open Preferences, and make sure your phone number and email address are listed for “Send & Receive from”.

Thanks Bob.

Exactly what I was leading to. Didn’t want to cause offence by suggesting that Lori may not have done it that way:)

thanks guys.

On Mac sys pref...have no messages box listed but I clicked iCloud Drive and messages there and turned on.

on phone, messages send receive....says 5 addresses, 4 emails and my phone number tho ph number is greyed out! Mayb that is the issue!

I checked phone settings ... allow calls on other devices.... is turned on but each device ( iPad and MacBook) is turned off?

And I can’t really remember exactly what Steps I took to do 2FA on Mac.... I know I had to enter in the code and thought I was done. Mayb I missed a step?

just came in from shoveling big dump of snow last night!!!

I went into Mac sys pref, clicked iCloud, account details, the security....
it shows two factor authentication is ON

so my issue with no text message on Mac is not because of this.....I am guessing

What about Messages on the Mac? Did you look in Messages > Preferences > iMessage?

Yes. That’s where you finally set up as in Bob”s post #7.

On my Mac when I click on messages icon....only 1 messg shows with texts on left side.

Pref...under general tab...shows default app, where to save messages (documents) and nothing that seems to link to other acts

In accounts tab... shows my 3 email addys and they are enabled.
My Apple ID is greyed out.
Don’t really know what i am supposed to be seeing!

If your phone number is not listed, that is why messages are not syncing.
