Within the last few days, iMessages are received but without any accompanying sound.

All SMS messages have their allocated sound.

This applies to my iPhone X and my wife’s iPhone 7.

I stress that this is new and that as far as I can tell, no alterations have been made to our settings.

I must also advise that my wife and I share my Apple ID.

You might think this relevant, but we’ve had a shared Apple ID for many years across all our devices.

Moreover, this problem affects both our iPhones when receiving iMessages from anybody.

So far, I’ve rebooted and force rebooted both our iPhones. Checked settings. Can’t find any changes.

Our iPhones otherwise work perfectly.

Any ideas, guys and gals?

As always, any advice appreciated.

I have this happen randomly (though not exclusively with iMessages) and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes I pick up my phone and notice someone messaged/texted me 40 minutes ago and I had no idea. Then an hour later they'll text and it will ding. :\

Thank you Jonathan for your rapid and useful reply. It gives me some hope that things may sort themselves out.

I just can’t understand why now after all these years.

Good of you to take the time and interest to reply.

Thanks again.

No problem, Ian. Now, I have sometimes forgotten that my phone was connected to a Bluetooth device (e.g. headphones that are not on my head anymore) and missed an alert sound because of that, but it also has definitely happened when the phone was not connected to such a device. If it becomes an increasingly frequent issue, you may want to consider restoring your phone to see if that resolves the issue. I'm assuming you've probably already combed through your sound and notification settings to be sure there was nothing awry there.
