I’m not sure how it happened but it seems that I have been sending picture messages for which I have been charged extra instead of text messages. I have had to turn on ‘mobile data’ in settings to send Like me, my wife now has an iPhone SE. Mine has a ‘Subject’ window below which is a window for the text. My wife’s only has a text message window. If I don’t use the subject window I can send without turning on ‘mobile data’ and presumably without incurring an additional charge.

Does anyone know why this is?

Is this in Messages, the green icon withe the white quote bubble? Can't see a 'Subject' window on mine (a 7), using iOS 12.0.1. What version are you using?

Have a go at your phone provider, ask them to look at the messages and ask for refund unless they can see pictures. I've twice recently had Three cancel data charges incurred abroad (outside EU). Shy bairns get nowt!

In Settings > Messages, there is a "Subject" option.

I'm also using iOS 12.
