Yesterday we went into the local Verizon store to replae my wife's iPhone 6 and ended up getting new phones for both of us. I hadn't planned on replacing my iPhone 8 so I hadn't run a backup the day before. No big deal because my important stuff should have been synched via iCloud.

Everything went smoothly for her but of course my setup had to bork thing up. Earlier today I discovered that none of my messages from the old iPhone were on the new phone and it had been about 10 days since my last true backup so my backup wasn't current enough to be useful. I spent at least an hour looking for an easy way to reansfer messages from my Mac to the new phone. Suddenly it occurred to me to check my iCloud settings on the new phone. In the setup process that had been turned off and I had forgotten to turn it on. Switch the setting to on and within a minute or two the messages are on my new phone. The moral(s) if the story are as follows:

1. Always check the simple things first.
2. Only very recent versions of IOS push Messages conntent up to iCloud. I believe this was introduced sometime during IOS 11.
3. If you search for how to tranfer Messages from an iPhone to a Mac there's tons of stuff out there. If you would like to go from the Mac to the phone good luck finding info on that,

Congrats Slydude & thanks for sharing. Awesome when you find a simple solution to what might have been a complex situation!:)

And hey...with all of the little details we need to remember...stuff like this can be forgotten very easily...even if normally we should know it (just too much going on to remember).;)

Moral of the story #2...DON'T go to the phone store to get one new phone...or you'll end up leaving with two new phones!!!;)

Hey Nick....

I think we better check up on Slydude's finances. Two brand new iPhones $$$. LOL

I'm beginning to wonder if he's been seen in those Red River casinos raking in his winnings? (Only kidding folks.)

Hey Sly.... which phone models did you buy?

ROTFL. It would have been better for the budget if I had never walked into the place. lol

I was in the middle of typing a post to ask our members if they knew the answer when it dawned on me to check that setting. The only reason I thought to check at all is something kept nagging at me telling me that messages could now be pushed/synched via iCloud. Of course this occurred to me after an hour or so of wasted time and two wasted software downloads which were useless because I misread the information on their site.

Haven't been to a casino in ages. Haven't won in a casino in even longer than that. Which explains why i don't go often. Lol

She traded in her 6S and I traded my 8+. We ended up with matching iPhone XS models. We almost went with the XR models but the difference between brightness of the screen was noticeable.
We didn't spring for the 512 GB models though. I'm not making forum administrator money like you are.. We often skip several models before upgrading but this time she wanted something lighter than her old one and the deals were good enough that I can pinch pennies for a while. Besides, I have to keep up with a colleague who just posted a picture of his in his FB page.

Hi Sly - glad that all worked out easily w/ your new iPhone - enjoy simple solutions! :)

But the casino comments reminded me of a trip in August - we drove to the Biltmore Inn in Asheville and treated our son & DIL to a stay for his birthday - we stayed an extra day and drove to Cherokee (just an hour away) - had visited many times before but never went to the casino (pics below) - so, looked around inside, had a nice lunch - played the slots for a half hour (not our thing anymore) - walked out w/ a grand total of $25 - maybe a 'new' cheap case for Susan's iPhone at the most - ;) Dave

Hi Dave:

Your photo reminds of the 2 1/2 years I spent living in Las Vegas during my military days. Good friend of mine retired there and went to work for the company which maintains the gaming machines for the casinos. We were both technicians in the military at the time.

Exactly. Sounds like successful lottery tickets!;)

iPhone 8 only just over a year old. Must have been one heck of a good 2 for 1 deal.:)

Hello Charlie - I've been to Reno once and Vegas probably four times (all medical trips) - Susan loved these casinos when you got a bucket of quarters - she would come back w/ silver on her face looking like the 'Tin Man' from the Wizard of Oz - that was a long time ago and we have little interest anymore - BUT our first time 'gambling' was on the island of Madeira (trip to Portugal in my last year of radiology residency) - I was playing roulette and won a BIG chip which Susan took and put in her purse - believe we walked out w/ a hundred bucks or so - BUT I found the food and Madeiran wines a much more enjoyable experience - :) Dave

No but SWMBO suggested I do it.Since she had been saying I didn’t need a new phone figured I better pull the trigger before she changed her mind.

Almost suggested a new iPad instead.

When the SWMBO gives the green light...you got to take advantage of it!;)

My thoughts exactly.

I almost suggested a new iPad for me instead of new phone but I have been informed that the next iPad the comes into the house is hers. Twice now she has gotten my castoffs after a screen crack.

Sly & Others - I WANT a new iPad - my iPad Air2's battery is slowly dying (now at 60% health using the Coconut app), i.e. now getting only 2-3 hrs of use at the most. The current iPad Pros would serve my needs well, but hesitating for several 'speculative' reasons: 1) Disappearance of the 'Home Button' and Facial ID - an advantage? and 2) Switch from the Lightning to USB-C port, as suggested below (LINK) - this would be a plus for me - do not like the Lightning port - small and flimsy, and having intermittent charging issues w/ all of my iDevices - SO, should one wait or buy into the current iPad offerings? Dave :)

Dave

I cannot really comment on the lightning-USB thing; but my experience with the iPhone X was this:

The swipe gestures are easy to use & learn and you will very quickly wonder why you ever thought the Home Button was there at all! It's a mechanical device that gets a lot of usage, runs the risk of wearing out and is slow for fingerprint recognition in comparison with Face ID.

It also takes up physical space that can be better utilised as screen estate without having to increase the physical size of the device.

Face ID is extremely reliable in my personal experience and as fast as you could reasonably want. It is said that the XS is faster; can't really see how, but if they say so.....

In other words, if future iPads follow the iPhone X model, I personally think the benefits far outweigh any disadvantages.

I've been in Las Vegas a few times and had mixed experience with the gaming machines. In the casinos, more times than none, I ended up loosing. On the other hand, I won at the airports' gaming machines while waiting for boarding my plain. In one occasion, I almost missed my plain.

In my view, the gaming machines are rigged at the airport for you to win and leave Las Vegas with a positive experience. ;D

I am still happy with my iPhone 6S+, although a lot of the time I make do with my old iPhone SE as it fits in my back pocket more easily and I can safely sit down with it there.

I assume to get the same screen size as my iPhone 6S+ I would need one of the new iPhone X models?

I really can't justify spending over £1,000 for a device like that, especially now I am retired :(

Lucky Slydude :)
