iPad asking to be connected to iTunes (?)
A question about my trusty old iPad 2 - A1395 (32 GB), which probably dates from c.2011.
It comes on with the usual Apple logo, but then shows the connecting cable indicating that it needs to be connected to iTunes.
Before I do this, can someone pse tell me why this has happened?
I can't remember it ever happening before.
    Thanks in advance.

    Your Mac's Specs
2017 27" iMac, 10.5" iPad Pro, iPhone 6s+, iPhone 7+, Numerous iPods, Mojave
Possibly it wants you to back it up via iTunes or there is an update available for it. In any event, there's no harm in connecting the iPad to your Mac and to iTunes.

    Thanks for your comment.
I just wondered about the possible update on the basis that the iPad is so old.

If your iPad is showing the cable and iTunes logo, it's entered DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode and is asking you to plug it into iTunes to restore a backup that is either in iTunes or iCloud. So when you do plug it into iTunes, you will get prompted to either setup the iPad as new or restore a backup that you hopefully have a recent one of. If you don't have a backup, then you're going to have to set it up as a brand new iPad and bring back all the apps you had on there and if you didn't back up your Photos/Videos and all that, you've lost those.

    OK and thanks.
The important stuff is on the MPB and/or Google Drive so that will be accessible I hope.
In fact, this might be a blessing in disguise because the poor old chap was getting really tired and slow.

Regarding the above, I duly plugged in the cable and connected the iPad to my MPB. A download started almost at once and was installed. When I switched back on again everything was as before ... a bit sluggish (as before) but it works fine.

"Settings" tells me that I have 9.3.5 (but I don't know what it was before the connecting-cable message came up). I suppose I got an update but I'm a little surprised that such an old version as mine is still getting updates. I'd be interested to know whether my present 9.3.5 is a recent update. If not, why did it get the message?

    Thanks in advance.

iOS 9.3.5 is indeed the latest version that is supported on that iPad.
