I'm running a MacBook Pro with the latest OS and a iPhone 7 with iOS 11.4.1.

The Calendar on my MacBook Pro and iPhone 7 sync fine with each other.

When I put something in Contacts on my iPhone, it shows up on the MacBook Pro. However, if I put something in Contacts on the MacBook Pro, it doesn't show up on the iPhone. Do I have a wrong setting somewhere? Thank you in advance for your expertise and assistance.

Look for a Setting/Preference for "On This Mac"? Look in your Contacts sidebar? You may need to select View > Show All Groups to view your On Your Mac option.

Here are a couple of things that I would check as possible soources of the problem:
1. On your Mac open Contacts and go to Preferences. In the Accounts tab make sure that the accounts that are enabled are the same as those enabled on your other devices.
2. Also on the Mac go to System Preferences and check the Internet tab.Make sure to check the settings for the account that you want to Sync. Make sure that the Contacts option is checked.

Those suggestions by Bob and Slydude are good ones. Here's another: Go to your iCloud account and check to see that the contacts you entered on your MacBook Pro are being reflected at iCloud. If they're not, they will not appear on your iPhone. If you copy them from your MacBook Pro to iCloud, they will then sync. Also make sure you have selected contacts to sync in System Preferences, iCloud.
