Greetings,

I upgraded from an iPhone 6S two weeks ago to an iPhone X and have been having problems with the new phone retaining my music. The majority of my music has been purchased from iTunes. The X "loses" random songs, which I have to download from the cloud. This has been a daily issue. Wondering if there is a simple solution before I head to the Apple store.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hi Pyrate Dave and a warm welcome to Mac-Forums.

You need to help us out a bit before we can help you.

I have the X also and it could just be a matter of getting some settings sorted.... or not.

So, to start with:

When you got the brand new iPhone X, how did you get your music on to it? iTunes, Apple Music, - in fact perhaps you could tell us right from the start, how you set up the X? You must have restored the apps and data from your old iPhone? How? Did that include Music?

Do you have Apple Music? Did you use iCloud or iTunes?

Sorry about this; but we need to know as much as possible about your setup to assist. I'm sure that when we get that info, we can sort things out.

Sorry for the lack of info, Ian.

When I originally got my new X, the tech at the Verizon store assisted me with downloading old iPhone info into my new iPhone via the Cloud. Everything seemed to go smoothly until later that day, I "lost" all of my songs (by "lost" I mean there was the download from cloud symbol at the far right of each song title). I manually downloaded each song, only to notice throughout the day that my phone was "losing" random songs (kind of like my phone is critiquing my choice of music). I would again manually download each "lost" song.

After a day of this, I was finally able to get some free time, so I connected my phone to my Mac and iTunes account. I followed prompts to transfer all of my old aps and info from the last back up of my iPhone 6S (at the time, I only had the free 5g of iCloud, so my phone hadn't been backed up to the cloud for a bit, but I would back it up to my Mac) onto my new iPhone X. Still having the issue. At first I thought it was occurring when I would connect my phone to my vehicles via Bluetooth, but have since realized that the phone keeps rejecting random songs even when I haven't connected to any other devices.

I have sync's with iTunes numerous times and backed up to both my Mac and the cloud (I gave in and purchased the additional data space for a buck a month).

My X is currently running iOS 11.4.1 and its telling me that the software is up to date.

Hopefully I haven't left anything out. I'll be away on a camping trip for the weekend, with minimal service, so I may not get back on to this forum until Sunday.

Thank you all for your assistance,

If you get the chance, maybe check out some of the recent hits from a search like this:

So, after trying all of the suggestions, my phone is still losing random songs. I think it mainly occurs when I link up to another device via Bluetooth. I've noticed it happens when I link to my headphones, and the stereos in my two vehicles. Is it possible that I have a faulty device? Everything else seems to work perfectly.

I guess you may have to do some more google searches with some added variables.

Sorry, I don't do much with Apple music/iTunes, iCloud and/or iOS devices.

Hi Pyrate Dave

I've not replied for a day or two mainly because Patrick was doing a fine job and I doubted I could contribute more.

But I have thought about your problem a lot and my instincts always come back to settings.

On your X, if you go into Settings > Scroll down to Music and tap on that.

It would be interesting to know what your settings are with respect to mine.

Mine:

"Show Apple Music" off (I don't subscribe to that).

LIBRARY - "Show Star Ratings" off. "iCloud Music Library" off.

It's that last setting, "iCloud Music Library" which I'd most like to know about as regards your settings. If yours is ON, then I perceive a potential conflict in that you are syncing your Music via iTunes (many times, you said above). Now, if you do that and iCloud Music Library is on, there might be a conflict.

If you want to use iCloud to back up your Music, then I suggest you do the following:

Switch off "iCloud Music Library" on your iPhone.

Now go into iTunes > Preferences > General and check the box "iCloud Music Library". This stores all your music, playlists and so on in the Cloud and allows all music to be downloaded and available on all your devices. So you have a backup.

But from what you are implying, you want to control what music is on your iPhone - rather than have everything downloaded from the cloud to your phone - thus syncing with iTunes.

If I've got this right, then you have to turn off the iCloud Music Library on your X.

I hope at least part of that makes sense:)

I may well be in error, but I see conflict issues between your manual syncing with iTunes and the possibility that iCloud is trying to sync with your X as well.

Best I can do. I truly hope it works out for you.

Thanks for pitching in with your help and suggestions Ian, and I would also suspect some oddball setting somewhere that's causing the problem.

It seems there are so many options and it can become very confusing as to how it's all supposed to work. And how or when can one tell when it just isn't working properly??? I guess when it just doesn't work as anticipated I suppose!! :Grimmace:

Patrick,

Thank you very much for all your help with this issue. In the grand scheme of things, it's not a huge deal.

Ian,

Thank you for all your assistance.

When I did my initial Google search, I saw the first link that Patrick had posted about ensuring that Apple Music was on, which it was. I have tried having Apple Music on and off, and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

My X does only has the following options under Music in settings:

Apple Music
Show Apple Music-currently set to off
Join Apple Music

Cellular Data-currently set to on

Downloads
Downloaded Music-1.88GB

PLAYBACK
EQ-Currently set to rock
Volume Limit-Currently set to off
Sound Check-currently has slide bar/button to the left

Home Sharing
Displays my Apple ID/personal email

iPhone .png

I did a search for Apple Library, but it brought me to the same music setting

Same thing with iCloud Music Library

There is a definite correlation between linking my X to another device via Bluetooth and losing the music. Earlier today, I checked my music ap and all of my songs were "present." I got into my truck, and played my music ap through my Ford Sync. Upon arriving at my destination, I checked my music ap and noticed that three songs needed to be downloaded again. I had the same experience yesterday when I grabbed my Bluetooth headphones and went out to mow the lawn; all was well until I linked my X with my Beats and "lost" a handful of songs. Maybe just a glitch in my phone, or an issue with iOS that the next update will correct. Or, I'm completely ignorant and doing something wrong, despite having my 17 year old tech genius also try and help.

Thank you again for all your assistance. Definitely a first world problem, but it's awesome to have people like you and the many others on this forum that will take time to assist others.

Definitely keep your 17 year old tech genius handy and available to help.

They seem to have a good understanding of this latest macOS and iOS stuff and especially the "music cloud" stuff.

@Pyrate Dave, the only difference in my setup is, I have Celleular Data turned off, have you tried that?

@Ferrar,

My iPhone initially came with the cellular data turned off. I turned it on to re-download my songs when away from wifi. Thank you for the suggestion.

Yesterday and today, I drove my Jeep, which has an aftermarket Pioneer head unit that I connect my phone to via Bluetooth. I have not "lost" any songs the past two days. I will check and see if linking to the factory Sony stereo in my F-150 causes any "loss." Ditto with my wireless headphones.

My wife and I are lucky that our oldest is such a good kid. He and his friends are really good with tech stuff, but this issue has even stumped them.
