Friend wants to send me a voice memo. Not sure whether she will use email address or iMessage cell number.

I have downloaded that app.... in case I want to send one to her.

What is the difference between the two?
What is maximum size one can send via email or imssg?

You don't need a special app to do this. It's an option built into Messages on the iPhone.

When you open up Messages, put in the name of the recipient, then if they have an iPhone you will see the word "iMessage" in the text window and to the right side, a microphone. If you tap and hold this down, you can dictate an audio file and send that in the normal way.

The recipient gets the file, opens it and listens to your message.

This only applies to you and the other having iPhones.

You then mention email which as far as I know doesn't support this although I've never even tried, I admit.

What was the app you downloaded? And was it downloaded to your iPhone or Mac?

I found an app voice memos in App Store. Will look at signal too.
What is max size of files one can use with air drop?
And can one do this long distance?

On iPhone....I have turned my airdrop ON to contacts only, have left wifi and Bluetooth not connected. Cellular data is on.
I read that receiver has to be within a range to get. Is that so?

Here's Apple's statement about the AirDrop requirements
If a device doesn't appear as an AirDrop recipient, make sure that both devices have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on and are within 30 feet (9 meters) of each other.

As it turns out...she tried Dropbox and that works great. Dropbox allows up to 20gb.
Much easier to work around.
