IOS 12 Public Beta Out

The IOS 12 Public Beta is out. This page will take you to general information about the beta program. Following the link takes you to an enrollment page with additional information. If you're not comfortable with the fact that beta software may have bugs that can cause your device to go nuts don't enrollin this program.

I just finished downloading the first beta a few minutes ago but haven't played with it yet.

Just a curiosity question, but why do the Mac OS X and macOS versions have code names or nicknames, but iOS never seems to, at least not as far as the public users are concerned???

And BTW, did anyone know that these are the "secret code names" of some previous and the latest iOS versions:

Every software project and (versions of that product) usually have a internal name to talk about it. They do that so that you can talk about 'Butler' in a fairly public setting and people won't pick that you were talking about a new version of iOS or macOS or whatever. Additionally, companies will create internal artifacts to rally the team around each release to build the team spirit and internal marketing.

So macOS has a name that is externally facing when announced and probably had (and has) an internal name that is just in code.

This is a common practice at every company I've been at.

Thanks Ashwin, and I'm aware of such actions, but I was curious as to why the "secret code name" is often and usually used in public when talking about OS X (macOS), but virtually never in any similar case when discussing any iOS version.

I was wondering the same thing. I'm sure there's someone in Cupertino responsible for making sure that info like that doesn't get into the wild. Hey Charlie, since you're divulging secret info, any truth to the rumor that Apple's prodict designs are the result of super secret alien tech gleaned from Area 51?;D

My guess is that OS X/macOS had the history/tradition of naming the releases, but I don't believe iOS ever had. But that's just my guess. Honestly, I seem to remember the release name of OS X/macOS (and their order) more than what number it equates to.

Thanks Ashwin, and that's sort of what my thoughts were. And the established habits just kept being used.

Odd, considering they are both from the whole Apple world and all the followers etc.
