Is this an iOS or an iBook issue?

When I opened my iPad this morning I found that about half or more of my saved items had disappeared from iBooks. I have no idea what happened. These are various downloaded articles and magazines, and manuals for my camera and flash. It seems to me that these are the oldest items on my iPad, which is (I believe) an iPad 2. I am running iOS 10.3.3 which I think is the most current version the iPad 2 can handle.

Does anyone know why this happened and if I can get the lost items back without going to the source and downloading again?

Thanks.

Mark

Items purchased from iBooks should be available to you if they are still being offered from the store. Any items that are removed from the store of course will no longer be available to you for re-downloading.

Having said that, do you have a backup? iTunes? iCloud? That is the only way that I know of short of re-downloading to get your items back.

Another note.... did you keep a copy of those items on your Mac? If you did, you can sync them back to your iPad.

My iMac, iPhone and iPad all show the same items in iBooks so I guess I'm synced on iCloud. But am I correct that if I retore from iCloud I first erase the entire iPad? Also, I haven't been to iBooks for a couple of weeks so I do not know how far back I have to go or even if I can choose how far back to go.

I tried restoring my iMac from TimeMachine but the OS does not allow an iBooks restore.

I think I'm out of luck. Computerwise its been a tough couple of weeks.

Thanks anyway.

@chscag, do you have any idea how this may have happened and if there is anything I can do to prevent it from happening again?

Thanks.

Yeah, it's the same with Kindle books. Neither Time Machine or CCC backs them up. It's a DRM feature. :(

No idea how your books could have disappeared from the iPad. I have had the same problem occur with my Kindle books and there doesn't seem to be a way to restore them. I suspect it has something to do with DRM but that's just a guess on my part. I've pretty much given up on ordering books in Kindle format. I'm back to ordering the paper copies.
