Hello everyone

My daughter has had an iPhone and iPad for some time - both of them associated with my iCloud account and Apple ID. She's now of an age though that I think she should have her own Apple ID.

How do I go about this whilst maintaining her access to all the apps she has on her devices that have been purchased on my Apple ID?

Is it as simple as signing out of my iCloud account on her phone and iPad, creating a new Apple ID in her name and signing into that iCloud account on both devices and then setting up family sharing on her and my devices? Or am I about to enter a world of pain with having to restore her phone and iPod to factory settings and setting them up as though they were new?

Thanks in advance, Nick :)

You got it right my friend. That's the proper way to do it. Keep in mind that when you create that new Apple ID for her, you will automatically invoke 2FA. That's Apple rules for all new accounts and can not be avoided. So perhaps you might want to think about that before creating a new Apple ID for her?

I was able to set up my 8yo daughters Apple ID, a few months ago, without using 2FA. We set it up on her iPad 2 running iOS 9, so I don't know if that is the difference?

Admin chscag is correct. All people creating their first ever Apple ID are obliged to accept 2FA and it is not possible to disable it.

Bob, I have no explanation for your experience other than to speculate that iOS 9 being rather old in computing terms was somehow excluded.

That can't be it. IOS 9 is the minimum for two-factor authentication though. See requirements here.

@Sly:

It appears Apple requires a valid credit card to be on file. An eight year old would naturally not have access to a credit card of her own unless the parents card is used. I don't know if that's why Bob was able to setup his daughter without using 2FA, but I can't see any other reason why he didn't have to.

What do you think?

I hadn't thought about it since I initially started reading the thread. I was still doing some show prep earlier today. I think I am going to do some research on 2FA this week and if I can find the right info I'll cover it extensively next Sunday.

Thanks chaps.

This 2FA is putting me off now. What does it entail? Does it mean that every time you sign into iCloud you are required to enter a code sent to your phone / iPad / Mac? Or is it required every time you wake a device up from sleep and enter your password / code / fingerprint?

Slydude - I think whatever the answer I'll wait for your analysis :).

Sly,

This might help. There are other articles along the same lines: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204915

If you go to the last page; under the heading "Can I turn off two-factor authentication after I’ve turned it on?" - it explains that this will not be possible for accounts recently acquired.

I do remember when I was setting the account up, the was an “age” question, and I believe may have been part of the reason? And, 2FA was an option, as it wasn't mandatory to, to allow it.

Thanks for that link Ian. I know I've seen that page before but you saved me a bit of time looking for it all over again.

OK guys... Bob is correct. It's the age factor. You have to be 13 years of age in order to obtain an Apple ID. Younger than 13, the Apple ID has to be obtained by the parent or guardian. Since Bob already had a previous Apple ID and he was obtaining a new one for an under age child, 2FA was only an option and not mandatory.

I believe member "nickyr" will be able to obtain an Apple ID for his daughter and not have to use 2FA. However, if Nick is reading this.... it might be a good idea to double check by giving Apple Support in the UK a call.

My bundle of joy is 16 so it looks like it'll have to be 2FA.

Ah.. sweet 16. :) When my daughter was that age, I could only wish that something like an Apple ID was the only problem I had. LOL. Sorry Nick, it does indeed look like she will have to learn how to use 2FA.

I remember when I was young, you didn't have to use 2FA.

You tell that to the kids today .....

...... and they won't believe you :)
