If I backup photos to the cloud and then delete photos from my iphone to gain space are they also deleted from the cloud?

Which cloud? What service? How are you doing the backup? Is it a backup or are the photos synced to the "cloud" version?

Ok I guess I am synced to the cloud. I thought by syncing I could regain space on my limited phone but I think if I delete a photo it will also go away on the cloud.

Hello Pat..... - you've not really clarified Jake's question, i.e. my assumption is that you are using one or more of Apple's iCloud services - correct? See the image below from my iPad Air 2 showing the iCloud 'Photo Choices' (I don't use them) - iCloud Photo Library & My Photo Stream are two services that can be setup on your iDevices - you need to understand each, so closely read the following links - iCloud Photo Library and My Photo Stream - you are given just 5 GB of 'free' iCloud storage, so if you're storing backups and photos, then more space will likely need to be purchased (see the first quote below from the initial link); also note the second quote from the same link about the need for photo backup. Back up your photos and videos

When you turn on iCloud Photo Library, your photos and videos automatically upload to iCloud. They're not duplicated in your iCloud backup. You can download your photos and videos from iCloud.com to your computer and store them as a separate library, transfer them to another computer with Image Capture or Photos, or store them on a separate drive.
