Yesterday I received notification from my bank that ApplePay was available, just open the Wallet app, take a picture of my eligible card and follow the instructions. But no! I find that the service is only available for iPhone 6, 6s and SE. A little checking seemed to confirm that this is true.

Not really a big inconvenience but I am one of those iPhone users who is usually a model behind, given that an iPhone lasts (with care) for about 4 years I am a bit sad to find that the 5s has already become redundant as far as compatibility with current apps while remaining perfectly compatible with the current iOS.:(

Not entirely true Rod. You can use your 5s for Apple pay but you would also need an Apple Watch. Read this article.

Ah, that's a rather large catch wouldn't you say? Might as well just continue using PayWave, I don't even have to take it out of my wallet (real physical leather one) ;) to do that.

Not to nit-pick, but you're THREE models behind. :)

Using Apple Pay on the watch has one small advantage over using it on the phone - it's always out of your pocket. Very easy to double-click the button on the side, twist your wrist to align it, and you're done. Nothing to put back in your pocket afterward, either.

To nit-pick... The iPhone 6 range models are all much larger than the 5s so I would maintain that they are different beasts and the the natural successor to the 5S is the 5SE. So just one model behind.

Sorry, but no.

The chip in the SE (it's not a 5SE) is on par with what's in the 6S/6S+ and much better than what is in the 6/6+. In fact, it's commonly said that the SE is essentially a 6S in a 4" form factor. So, at best, it's TWO models behind.
