In the market for an iPhone, 6s or SE. The projected use is 6-8 email accounts, PDF reader, MS Office, and that's about it. Not a fan of iTunes or rather listening to music on the iPhone. The only activity that will impact the local storage is pictures. The iPhone is for a grandma' with two grand kids whome she sees couple of times a week.

Not knowing the size of the iOS impact on the local storage, it's hard to select between the 16 and 64GBs local storage. What is the size of iOS 9.x on these iPhones?
TIA...

The 16G phones will have somewhere around 12G available for you to work with. The 64G nets you approximately 50G for you. That's "total", and you do need to keep some free in order to allow for iOS updates down the road.

When you say that the only thing impacting local storage is pictures, are you referring to using the phone to TAKE pictures? Or access albums? Or... ???

I personally HATE the form factor of the 5/5S/SE. It is WAY too small for me to use for anything practical except purely a phone. The 6/6S was much better for me, but I've moved to the 6S+ and won't go back. The keyboard is significantly easier to use WITHOUT making mistakes (and I have slender fingers), the larger display make viewing pictures more enjoyable, and the camera on the 6S+ is the best one out there from an iPhone.

Thank Ember1205...

~12GBs storage should be more than enough to take pictures, no creating/accessing albums, no need for iCloud, iTunes, etc. The grandma' is petite-size ~4' 12", the 6 Plus is way too big for her. iPhone 6s 16GBs it is...

Can she download the pictures from the iPhone directly to a PC and/or to MacBook? To my recollection, this can be done with iTunes on the PC, but not certain if it's possible without iTunes.

PS: My apologies, it's been awhile I had an iPhone...

I would not buy a 16 GB iPhone after having owned two of them. As noted, after installation of iOS and the included Apple apps, a 16 GB iPhone may have less than 12 GB available. I now have 2 iPhones, both 64 GB. For some reason, Apple no longer produces a 32 GB version iPhone (which in my opinion would be just right for me).

Ditto. I have a 16 GB phone which is not a problem most of the time. I does become a problem for me on the iPad though. A 32 GB phone would be great for me. I said a few weeks ago in the chat that I think the day is coming when the storage "floor" for IOS devices would go up a bit with the 16 GB devices essentially disappearing from the lineup.

You can install the iCloud app on a Windows machine and photos from the phone will auto-sync over to it (provided you boot the PC at least once every 25-28 days). This will allow for photos to be deleted off of the phone yet still captured on the PC via the iCloud sync.

I had a 5S 32G that, size-wise, was perfect for me. With the 6S / 6S+ have a higher resolution camera, I would want the 64G. It just so happens that I got a great deal on a used 6S+ 128G so I grabbed it. I'll absolutely never run out of space.

Let's not forget how easy it is to move photos via AirDrop if there is a WiFi network in the house. Unless someone is purely using a iPhone as a phone, then 16GB is a joke in today's market, when every photo you take is 2.1-5mb

AirDrop isn't bad, but using the Photo Stream is seriously easy to sync your photos down to a PC. As long as the machine gets somewhat regular use, there should be no issues with taking a ton of photos and having them all appear on the computer automagically. I think his gram would like that. My mother-in-law is approaching retirement age and has an iPad, and iPhone, a laptop, and a desktop. She's NOT tech savvy, and appreciates simple setups like I've described here. I appreciate them too, since I'm her HelpDesk. It's nice when they don't have to call to get things fixed. :)

Very true, was just giving another solution, as I Airdrop Photos all the time, which saves me opening Photos, and exporting them, or waiting for them to sync up, if I only just took a Photo.

Your Mother-In-Law must know a bit, if she owns a iPad, iPhone, Notebook and Desktop. My ex Mother-In-Law rings me all the time about her single iPad, because she isn't Tech Savvy ;)

I gave her a "PHD" in tech. Press here, dummy! Lol

Seriously - she uses the computers predominantly for email and to access her work programs from home via Citrix. The iPad is mostly for reading and some streaming (video). The phone is messaging, taking pictures, and as a phone. She's learned what to do with each one and I've helped her set up the sync between the devices where warranted and useful. She's learned what each "tool" is capable of and what to use it for, and she knows what to expect in terms of the devices being in sync with each other. So, she really isn't tech savvy, she's just a reasonable learner and doesn't push the limits of anything.

I appreciate all of the advices, thanks people…

The primary purpose for the 6s is being a business phone, in a healthcare related business. As such, she does not want to utilize iCloud for transferring files between devices. That includes documents, pictures, contacts, etc. Her current Windows 7.5 phone, about 6-7 years old with 3G. The phone has 16GBs storage and currently there is 12GBs available.

She plugs it in to her PC and she can manage the files within explorer. That is pretty much what she needs with the iPhone as well. I do realize that it is probably not possible with the iPhone, due to the different file system. Is there any app that could manage files without cloud-based services? I would love a Wi-Fi based app and yes, she does have a Wi-Fi network.

A cursory search indicates that both AirDrop and Photo Stream requires iCloud on the Windows 7 PC, would that be correct?

As for the 16 vs. 64GBs...

While I am not against more storage, there is no reason to pay for something that she will never going to use. Even if money is not an issue, especially when it is a tax deduction....

I'm glad to see Airdrop is working so well for some people I am on my second MBP and iPhone 5s and it still doesn't work for me at all. On the other hand FileDrop works just fine and 64Gb is perfect on the phone.

The iPhone "abstracts" everything in the underlying file system, so managing it like a USB Hard Drive is not usually something folks do. Leveraging iTunes to put items onto and take items off of the phone is a pretty reasonable method.

Some folks do want that and evidently there are options:

iMazing

It even supports Wi-Fi, albeit I am not certain how well it actually works...

I find the 5s, which I believe is the same dimensions as the SE, a perfect sized phone for both handling and storing in jeans or handbag pockets. 64gb definitely.

5, 5S, and SE are identical footprints. Cases, screen protectors, and the like are all completely interchangeable. While I like the physical size of that line for fitting in my pocket and such, I just can't effectively use a phone that size - they keyboard is far too small for me.
