Hi all,

I was disappointed to discover that the new feature Night Shift is not available for the iPhone 5c after the update. Can anyone recommend an app that does something similar? I've heard of Flux but I don't want to have to jailbreak my iPhone to use it.

Thanks!

I looked around in the App Store for anything that duplicates what Night Shift does on the later model iPhones but could find nothing that works. Most of the Night Vision apps are for low light effects for your iPhone camera. Perhaps someone else may know of something that works.

This is not an uncommon practice for Apple to use certain features as an incentive (or not depending on the feature) to get people to upgrade to newer versions of the iPhone. When I heard about the Flux app from a friend a while back I went looking and just like you found out that its available for free but required the iPhone to be jailbroken because they are using undocumented APIs to accomplish the color changes.

I've been playing with Night Shift on my 6S and can say that the warmer tone is definitely better right before hitting the bed when the light is quite low in the bedroom..

A related question before I update my iPhone and iPad - can this night shift view be turned off please?

Edit - it seems that it can be turned off in Settings. Updating my iPad now :)

Edit2 - in fact it seems to default to 'off' anyway :)

Yes, it can be turned off and will adhere to a day/night schedule according to your locale. I just tested it with my 6+ and immediately turned it off. Sorry Apple, but your "Night Shift" is a shift in the wrong direction for me as I can't stand the yellowish tint it created. :Grimmace:

I just had an odd experience with Night Shift (iPhone 5s), it was still on at 12PM so I went to the Sys Prefs and turned it off. No effect, had to reboot to return to normal display.

Purely a personal thought and experience; but I've not found the Night Shift function that appealing. One has always been able to "Invert Colours" or use "Greyscale" to aid reading in different ambient lights. And there are shortcuts for turning on the former. Night Shift doesn't seem to add much.

Now, on my iMac; that's a different story. I use f.lux because AFAIK, there are no other options.

I use f.lux on the laptop too. I'm not that taken with Night Shift but my wife who often wakes during the night and listens to talking books to get back to sleep finds it good because it's automatic. If she had to make the adjustment manually, well, she wouldn't. So as far as it may disturb cycadian rhythms Night Shift works very well for her.

The exact hue that you get is adjustable. I find that it's gentler on my eyes once natural light is gone (mine is scheduled for sunset to sunrise, but you can also do it on a specific, timed schedule). If the yellow tone is too much for you to take, make the tone "cooler".
