So some time back I was implementing guided access on my old iphone and locked it up. It doesn't respond to touches on the screen at all. This persists through a hard reset and power drain. Since then I have reinstalled my mac so now I can't do anything to it through itunes such as a restore from backup. Wi-fi is disabled so I can't use find phone. How else can I get functionality back?

Have you tried DFU mode on your iPhone 5s?

Entering DFU Mode on iPhone

Plug your device into your computer with a USB cable.
Turn off the device.
Hold the Power button for 3 seconds.
Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds.
Release the Power button but keep holding the Home button.

You should then be able to setup your iPhone again.

I didn't know about this. I did that and performed a restore from the backup but the apps are gone. A sync is just performing a new backup and not putting the third party apps on the phone. The folders are there though.

Anyone? A sync is only backing up the phone and the restore only restored texts, pics, music, notes, and contacts. Only the default apps are installed. Some of the third party apps have data stored on them so how do I force a an app reinstall from the copy stored on my mac?

Unless the backup you made included all your apps and their associated data, they won't be restored. Apparently, when you made the backup to your Mac it didn't backup everything, and you can't restore what didn't get backed up. Did you by chance also backup to iCloud? If you did, you may be able to restore that way. Also, how many backups are listed when you use the restore function from iTunes? Sometimes an older backup may be better if it has all your apps and data even if it's somewhat out of date.

The apps are on my hard drive. They show up in itunes and under my itunes folder in mobile applications. It's the same backup button I've been hitting for years. I have 2 backups for this device one of which was created yesterday after the reset. Neither of them work. How do I force the apps to be put on the device. When I first got my 5s I tried to set it up as a restore from my old one and everything restored but the applications. At the time I called Apple and the tech told me what to do but now I don't remember what that was.

I also keep all my iOS apps on my iMac for the same reason. Just open iTunes and select "My Apps". You should see all the apps you downloaded and that are stored on your Mac. All you need to do is attach your 5s, wait for it to appear in iTunes and then select it. After you select your 5s, select apps. Then, for those apps you wish to reinstall, select "install" and it will change to "will install". After you're through selecting, then hit the sync button at the bottom and iTunes will install all the apps you chose for installation. That's what I do and it works every time.

Most of the apps are set for will install and those that aren't I never installed on it. Still though the apps don't load. Also install is greyed out. If it helps this isn't for my 5s but for my old 4.

I thought it was for your 5s. I don't know if all your apps are compatible with the 4. An iPhone 4 is an older phone and the version of iOS on it may not allow some of those apps to install. The latest version of iOS you can place on an iPhone 4 is 7.1.2. You need to check all your apps and see which ones are compatible. Those apps which are compatible should install on the iPhone 4.

Okay, as I understand the story so far, you're back to having a working iPhone but your missing the apps you purchased (for free or paid) from the App Store, and the backups aren't restoring them.

One word: relax.

Your apps aren't gone. If you only backed up to iCloud, then iCloud only has a *list* of all the apps you purchased -- it doesn't physically back them up, since that's redundant (and would take up much more space then the 5GB you probably have).

I had to do this once, and at first it didn't look like any of the apps were there either, but overnight, a number of them reappeared -- as dimmed icons with circles filling in at first (which I later realized was downloading) and then eventually most of them came back. Maybe that's what is going on with yours, and it just takes a lot of time because it is (stupidly) trying to download all the apps at once.

But even if that isn't what's happening, again I say "relax." If you have the basic system and the default apps, then you have the App Store. Sign in (if needed), go to "Purchased," select an app (just one for now) and re-download it. See how that goes. Then do the rest of them.

You may (or may not for Game Center games) lose any high scores or stuff like that, but the apps will return. As Charlie said, there might be one or two that don't because the app has been pulled because the developer never updated it for higher than iOS 7, but most apps are well-supported so I'm sure you'll get nearly all of them or all of them back over time.

Some apps have data in them. I don't want to lose that. I don't back up any data to the icloud because I don't trust it.

Should have trusted it. I don't think you're getting that data back, sorry. This is why we constantly bang the drum about backups.

I did a back up. The apps are on my hard drive. How do I get them on my phone?

Please see post #10. You can just re-download them from the App Store if you can't get them from the iTunes backup (you never did explain -- unless I missed it -- what you meant by your iTunes backups won't work).

Restoring from the backup worked however iTunes didn't put the apps on the phone even though they are on the hard drive. As I've stated some of those have data on them and redownloading them from the app store won't recover that data. I have already stated that the third party apps aren't going back on the phone when I sync the phone or restore from the backups. See posts 3, 4, & 8.
