Since upgrading my iPhone 5s to iOS 9 I have a 6 digit passcode. I upgraded by setting up as a new iPhone using ipsw file due to initial upgrade issues. My wife's iPhone upgraded with no problems from the downloaded upgrade file from the App Store. She only has her original 4 digit passcode. I cannot see a way to change this on either her phone or mine.

I thought that a 6-digit passcode was now mandatory if you use TouchID, but I can confirm that the instructions in that article work.

If you already have a 4 digit passcode before you upgrade it is still the same afterwards.

I believe if you already had touch ID and a 4 digit passcode set up and upgraded to iOS 9, it remained the same. There is the option, however, to change that to 6 digit (which may be a good idea for most folks).

Nah, I was "forced" to set a 6-digit code when I upgraded to iOS 9. There was a lot of buzz about them mandating that, so I thought nothing of it. I was very surprised to find there was a way to go back to a 4-digit code.

Come to think of it, I didn't simply "upgrade" to iOS 9. I did a clean restore, which would have prompted me to set a new passcode in the process. That must be the difference.

There has been a rash of strong-arm robberies in Chicago and the thieves ask for the pin. It seems the only good a pin does is keep people who might have access to your phone from being able to unlock and use your phone. It does nothing to prevent thieves from accessing it. I think another pass code that would disable the phone in one attempt would be more useful for people who encounter these thieves. When asked for their pass code they could give the second one and when the thief enters it the phone would become useless until restored by Apple.

Wouldn't want to enter the wrong one yourself by mistake though. Oops!
