Circle Icon instead of WiFi or Edge

I'm not sure if someone already answered this question. I searched the forum and didn't find anything. If this is a repost, I apologize.

Since updating to iPhone Version 2.2, this circle keeps appearing where the EDGE, 3G or WiFi icon would. I don't have 3G coverage in my area yet, so it appears sometimes when I'm on the Edge network. The circle doesn't last very long, only 20 seconds or so.

It's not causing any problems or issues, I was just curious what it is or what it means.

That's the symbol for GPRS. Likely your provider is dropping their edge signal.
