My Computer name is ROBERTS-IMAC the local access name is ROBERTS-IMAC-6.local.

Why are the names different? Where did the -6 come from?

El Capitan OS.

Also why are shared computer name in Computer drop down all in lower case letters?

Thanks

You have set up sharing or reconfigured it as far as the OS thinks six times, which allows you to see the name of your Mac in case there is another networked computer with the same name, hence your computer name plus "-6 local".

PS: if you want to rename it, click the edit button and enter the name you want. BTW: I don't think spaces are allowed.

Probably from tradition, just as e-mail addresses used to be all lowercase.

I'm sure Google would have much more elaborate answers for you if you want to go searching and exploring. You can probably learn more that way too. Sort of finding out, why do some crazy things work on a Mac the way they do??? Some of them are quite interesting. Some make no sense at all!!! :Smirk:
