Well maybe me and not a malfunction..

My computer sees the drive as per image in disk utility but Time machine does not see it..

Trying to do back ups..

The EXT drive does not appear on desktop or in finder when plugged in..

When i first started it time machine opened up but wouldn't let me use that drive..Offered two options select disk and erase {I THINK} so as select disk would not work i assumed erase was a formatting option and chose that ..In hindsight it seems like a bad decision...

Can any one assist please and thank you...I am such a rookie..

If Disk Utility (DU) sees the external drive, erase it. When you open DU, go to View, and make sure Show All Devices is selected.

What format/partition schemes are you selecting? You need to use GUID for partition, and HFS+ for format.
