I recently downloaded the new Sierra 10:13:1.

When I shut down, the iMac looses the internet connection. When this happens, I still have a connection with my iPads, Radio, phone, all that. So the modem is OK. Also, when this occurs, I just have my phone soaking up WiFi energy. Radio and iPads usually shut down.

The way I get around this is turning off and restarting the modem. TheI am back on-line with the desktop.

How can I set up my Mac so this disconnection no longer occurs?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Of course you lose connection when you shut the iMac down. What do you expect to happen when you turn the computer off?

Explain what you mean by "shut down". Are you actually powering off your iMac or do you mean sleep? If it's waking from sleep that you're referring to and you have to reset your modem-router to reconnect, you need to check your System Preferences, Network options. Make sure that your iMac is set to connect to your network first and that your modem-router is broadcasting its SSID.

Apologies for not having been more clear.

By “shut down”, I mean power off.

I have checked and triple-checked my system preferences.

I will do so again.

Modem router is working perfectly.

Yes, when you power off, the connection will be broken. That's because you powered off the WiFi circuitry in the iMac. When you power it on again, give it a few seconds and it should reconnect, which will be evident by the fan-shaped icon on the top bar filling in with bars. If that is not happening, you don't need to cycle the modem, just cycle the WiFi off then on again on the iMac. Better still, don't shut the iMac down. I have a 2008 iMac that runs 24/7 that I reboot maybe once every few weeks, or if there is a software update that forces it before then. Otherwise, I have the screen go to sleep, but keep the CPU ticking over to maintain the connections.

Hey Jake, Ian...Thanks. Will do.

I always get conflicting advice about leaving the mac on sleep all the time or shutting down.

I will just follow your guidance.

Peace and Beans,

John
