The only relation between the two is that StartPage is an "aggregator" type search engine. That is, it uses the results of other search engines (including Google) to give you your search results. It does this without passing any of your personal information or your search history on to anyone else, nor do they keep that information themselves.
Anonymous Search Engine Review: Startpage

You will find lots of user reviews of StartPage here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/startpage-https-privacy-search/reviews/

and a very comprehensive comparison of DuckDuckGo (another popular search engine touting security as its main feature) with StartPage here:

(Spoiler alert...StartPage wins.)

Startpage is web based. Enter: Startpage.com - The world's most private search engine

That will take you to their website where you can input a search and where you can make it your default browser. But as far as I know, you can't include it as an option within Safari.

How I did it is simple. I bookmarked Start Page directly to my Favorites Bar. Then I moved it to the far left position (first in order) so that it is always instantly accessible.

Good idea, Randy. I suppose one could also Pin the Tab for easy opening?

It should work for that page. So far that feature has worked with every site I've tried.

I like that feature but it's easy to forget what you have pinned. I guess that's why I only have a few places pinned at the moment.

Is Startpage still as trustworthy, after being bought by a part of System1?

Startpage No Longer Recommended by Restore Privacy

(just wondering... I know some of the privacy types, can border on ... shall we say... a bit obsessive. And I've come to view the folks that reply around here, to be a bit more "level headed".

Do you the option to “Show website logo in tabs” enabled? Or it’s something to that affect?

The article you cited is as straightforward and as comprehensive as it can be. Your guess is as good as anyone else's as to whether Startpage is now compromised.

You might want an alternative to Startpage at this point. Check out:

Okay, Startpage, the Web search engine that I previously recommended over any other, may no longer be secure:

Startpage Acquired by System1, Privacy One Group – Still Safe?
Startpage No Longer Recommended by Restore Privacy

I now recommend this search engine, which in the scheme of things may be better than Startpage anyway, as it aggregates the results from several search engines:

MetaGer
MetaGer: Privacy Protected Search & Find

About Us - MetaGer

In my testing, the results of MetaGer searches are excellent.
