Guy's
i am trying to move my itunes library from my mac to my WD network drive due to size. it is 850 gb and growing.

I started the transfer yesterday by means of copy and paste and it estimated 23hrs to complete. I have woken up this morning and it stopped with an unknown error.
I have tried to re start in the same manner but a file at a time this time and i get the following message.

Some files cant be processed, either because you don't have permission to modify them or because they are on a locked volume.

can anyone help or advise the best way to do this please?

Cheers

better not to do it manually

Make sure you have write access on that drive and do the following

Keeping your iTunes collection on an external

The following assumes you want to keep all your iTunes music and movies on an external disk and ensure new music is always stored on the external drive, and that you want to share the iTunes library among multiple Users of your mac

First, you need to consolidate your iTunes Library to a folder you have chosen of the external drive.

Select the command consolidate library from the Advanced Menu. This will copy all your itunes media to the external folder and link the itunes library file to it

The files will now be on the external while the library.xml file (the index as it were) will still be in the Users > Me > Music folder of your mac.

If you want this file on the external as well as well, copy it to external iTunes folder, start itunes with the alt key pressed and you will have the option to select the library file now on the external

Select the library file you just copied and now both your music and the library are on the external

Press the alt key in the other account to get iTunes to see the library file, now both accounts are using the same index. Make sure both Users itunes have the same location for the music folder set in their advances preferences.

Also make sure that all users have read and write privileges for the external folder and the library.xml file

You can now delete the old Itunes folder off your mac

perfect

it sounds like your the person to speak to.
I am not sure if we are using different versions of iTunes. I have V 11.0.1 (12) 64 bit But I cannot see the command section in the advanced menu.

I have found advanced under
Itunes . preferences . advanced

thanks for your help

Thanks for your help so far.

after 48hrs of copying it appears that a few files have failed to copy over but all in all most of the files are now done.

Couple of questions

1) the files that ahvent copied over appear to be movies with longer titles where it say the character limited as be exceeded? How do i rectify this?
2) The copy hasn't replicated the folders in the same manner as on the master drive. Does that Matter?

thanks again for your help. I am quite lost with this at the minute.

cheers

I appear to have got in a mess with this.

i have tried to consolidate the library to the network driver as above and some of my movies have not copied across.
Rather than making it worse i haven't played but tried to copy to xml file over and i get an error message when i try to open saying

The itunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (13014)

help!
