Self-assigned IP address/no IP address, internet connection issue

Hi, I hope someone can help.

Despite having been online wirelessly on my MacBook Pro all morning, I now find that I cannot get online. When I go into system preferences it shows that my airport has no IP address. Then it self-assigns a 169. address, which obviously has no internet access.

This is not a router problem as there are another MacBook Pro, two iPhones and 2 iPads connected in the house with no problem. Even so I have rebooted the modem, reset the modem, turned all the other hardware off etc in order for the airport to assign a usable 192. IP address. All to no avail.

I've looked through loads of forums, tried deleting the airport settings and creating anew. I've tried to connect from a new 'location'. I've tried turning the firewall off and on again. I've tried reassigning the DHCP lease.

When I plug in an ethernet cable, it connects no problem.

Can anyone point me in the direction of anything else to try.
Thanks,
Lee (Miss)

Interesting. It sounds like you've done a good job so far of troubleshooting. A couple of questions - is this problem unique to your house - can you wirelessly connect somewhere else?

So you've tried renewing the DHCP lease - and that didn't work. Just out of curiosity - have you tried manually assigning an IP address (pick one that doesn't conflict with the other devices connected to the router).

Does your MBP "see" the router you're trying to connect to? How old is your MBP?

I haven't tried to conect outside teh house today but there are other wireless networks within range, some of which are open and public, like BT Fon etc. When I connect to them it says that airport is connected, with an IP address of 10.202.189.62 but it doesn't go online. I get an error message from Chrome:

"The server at Welcome to Facebook - Log In, Sign Up or Learn More can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed. DNS is the web service that translates a website's name to its internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing Google Chrome from accessing the network.
Here are some suggestions:
Reload this web page later.
Check your internet connection. Reboot any routers, modems, or other network devices you may be using.
Check your DNS settings. Contact your network administrator if you're not sure what this means.
Try disabling DNS prefetching by following these steps: Go to Wrench menu > Preferences > Under the Hood and deselect "Use DNS pre-fetching to improve page load performance."
Try adding Google Chrome as a permitted program in your firewall or antivirus software's settings. If it is already a permitted program, try deleting it from the list of permitted programs and adding it again.
If you use a proxy server, check your proxy settings or check with your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working.
If you don't believe you should be using a proxy server, try the following steps: Go to Applications > System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies and deselect any proxies that have been selected."

What do you think?

What do you think?

It's because you've connected to a 'private' network - which doesn't have a connection to the outside world.

It is interesting that you can get a 10.xxx address assigned though.

Do you have anything running on your computer that blocks ip addresses or blocks/monitors port connections? Have you tried simply restarting your computer?

BTW - keep your firewall off (on your computer), you don't need it, and we don't need it in the way while troubleshooting.

I'm about to move into WAG mode here - where I'll say - do some standard shotgun blast 'remedies' just to see what happens - which includes using Onyx to repair disk permissions, flush your caches and then restart the computer.

I called AppleCare finally and we have determined that it's a hardware problem with the network card. Not what I wanted to hear but at least we know. Appointment in the Apple Store tomorrow.

Thanks for your help

Same problem

I am having the exact same problems that you are describing. I went through the same motions except the people at the Apple store would not help me. They denied that I had a problem because the WiFi connected there just fine. I probably need the same thing you need to fix your computer but what can I do to prove to them that I do have a problem?

I am having this problem as well and have tried troubleshooting myself but nothing seems to work. Something I may add though is that at the same time this happened, the circuit breaker got flipped and during the time it was off, all of my electronics were connected to the wifi, but didn't connect to the internet. When I flipped the switch back on, everything was connecting to the internet fine except my laptop.

Tonyverse try resetting the router, leaving unplugged for twenty minutes or so after depressing the little set button and see if you can set up again. Pretty fragile instruments routers. Next thing to check out is the wifi card in your laptop. Spikes can keel 'em stone dead.
